From a field with some strange contestants, one word clearly took the cake! What this word means and how it entered the German language, as well as the hilarious way the Tagesschau dealt with this news, let&#8217;s explore.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>A wide variety of\u00a0<em>Jugendw\u00f6rter<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jugendwort 2021?!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DBvZGRa6I-E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first I heard about it was from the\u00a0<em>Tagesschau<\/em>, the prime German TV news program.\u00a0<em>Nachrichtensprecherin\u00a0<\/em>(news anchor) Susanne Daubner presented the\u00a0<em>Jugendw\u00f6rter\u00a0<\/em>for 2021 in a short video on social media, with a seriousness that you are unlikely to ever hear these words uttered with. They include\u00a0<em>sheesh, wild, Digga, sus, Cringe, akkurat, same, papatastisch, Geringverdiener, Mittwoch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a very short description of what all these words mean, and how one of them is a strange contestant. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/stil\/jugendwort-des-jahres-2021-was-cringe-sus-und-sheesh-bedeuten-17601847.html\"><em>Frankfurter Allgemeine<\/em><\/a> did a great guide on these words if you want a more elaborate explainer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>sheesh<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many words from this list,\u00a0<em>sheesh\u00a0<\/em>is a straight copy from English &#8211; so you&#8217;re already familiar with the term. In German, it means something along the lines of\u00a0<em>Meine G\u00fcte!\u00a0<\/em>(my goodness!)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em> wild<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Wild<\/em>, sometimes also spelled\u00a0<em>wyld<\/em>, is basically the same as the English again. In the same way you&#8217;d say <em>that&#8217;s wild!\u00a0<\/em>to something that&#8217;s crazy or astounding in some way, young Germans might use it just like that, too (pronounced in the English or the German way).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Digga<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not a new term at all in German. It&#8217;s a term that sounds like\u00a0<em>Dicker\u00a0<\/em>(fat one\/thick one), which doesn&#8217;t refer to their physique, but to the fact that you&#8217;re\u00a0<em>dick befreundet\u00a0<\/em>(chummy) with them. However, over time it has also simply become a synonym for something like &#8220;dude&#8221; in English. Like that word, it&#8217;s mostly used for boys\/men. <em>Digga<\/em> was a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/germanys-youth-word-2020\/\">runner-up in 2020<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>sus<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The video game Among Us spread this word when it became wildly popular in 2020 (even though it released in 2018). It&#8217;s a game where a traitor needs to be found out, while completing all kinds of tasks. When they do something that&#8217;s suspicious, they&#8217;re\u00a0<em>sus<\/em>. German does have a word that would work perfectly with this abbreviated version too &#8211;\u00a0<em>suspekt<\/em>. Used both as a verb, adjective and noun (don&#8217;t forget the capital letter C in German!), it replaced in part the\u00a0German classic <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/untranslatable-german-words-teil-2\/\"><em>fremdsch\u00e4men<\/em><\/a>. <em>Cringe<\/em> was a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/germanys-youth-word-2020\/\">runner-up in 2020<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>akkurat<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Akkurat\u00a0<\/em>means&#8230; Well, accurate. Other German words are\u00a0<em>exakt, korrekt, genau<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Genau<\/em> (precisely, exactly) is used a lot in conversation. <em>Akkurat<\/em> sounds overly formal, like if you&#8217;d say\u00a0&#8220;accurate&#8221; instead of &#8220;exactly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>same<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Used in English more and more as well,\u00a0<em>same\u00a0<\/em>just means that &#8211; I&#8217;ve also experienced this\/I also feel that way. Again, pronounced in the English way.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>papatastisch<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A reference to successful German Twitch personality Kevin Teller, also known as &#8220;Papaplatte&#8221;. It basically means &#8220;good&#8221; or &#8220;fantastic&#8221; &#8211; but only to a small number of people. A weird entry, that almost nobody even knew before it showed up in the list. It did so, because people can nominate their own words these days &#8211; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esports.com\/de\/jugendwort-2021-von-papaplatte-das-steckt-hinter-papatastisch-260526\">followers of Papaplatte thought it would be funny to push it in<\/a>. So it&#8217;s more a meme than a real word in use.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Geringverdiener<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Geringverdiener\u00a0<\/em>(m, low-income earner) is a <em>Beleidigung\u00a0<\/em>(f, insult) and means &#8220;loser&#8221; basically. But it&#8217;s used mostly as irony in the form of the phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RWTH_memes\/comments\/laf95b\/aus_dem_weg_geringverdiener\/\">&#8220;<em>aus dem Weg, Geringverdiener<\/em>&#8221; (get out of my way, low-income earner)<\/a>. It&#8217;s used to make fun of snobby, rich people that think they&#8217;re better than others simply because they have money. The joke can go on forever, of course, with things like: you have a car? Not even your own private plane? Get out of my way,\u00a0<em>Geringverdiener<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mittwoch<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll quote Constanze in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/germanys-youth-word-2020\/\">2020 youth word post<\/a>, where <em>Mittwoch<\/em> was also featured: &#8220;Wednesday. Relating to a meme featuring a frog, containing the words \u2018Es ist Mittwoch, meine Kerle\u2019 (\u2018It is Wednesday, my dudes\u2019).&#8221;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>And the winner is&#8230;<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Cringe&quot; ist Jugendwort 2021 | tagesschau\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WC8BCvEGvyA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cringe!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The word got the most votes, and here&#8217;s how Susanne Daubner announced it:<\/p>\n<p><em>Aber was ist das eigentlich? Cringe ist das Gef\u00fchl, das Sie haben, wenn ich den folgenden Satz sage: &#8220;Digga, wie fly ist eigentlich die Tagesschau, wenn sie mit Jugendw\u00f6rtern flext? L\u00e4uft bei dir, ARD!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(But what actually is that? Cringe is the feeling that you have, when I say the following sentence:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dude, how fly is the Tagesschau, when it&#8217;s flexing with youth words?
