When you want to ask in German what someone\u2019s occupation is, you have different options to ask that question:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" valign=\"top\" width=\"230\"><strong>Formal language<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" valign=\"top\" width=\"230\"><strong>Informal language<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"230\">Was machen Sie beruflich?<\/p>\n<p>Was sind Sie von Beruf?<\/p>\n<p>Was ist Ihr Beruf?<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"230\">Was machst Du beruflich?<\/p>\n<p>Was bist Du von Beruf?<\/p>\n<p>Was ist Dein Beruf?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>You simply reply:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIch bin &#8230;\u201d = \u201cI am a &#8230;\u201d \u00a0and insert the occupation you carry out, e.g. \u201cIch bin Student\/in\u201d (I am a student) or \u201cIch bin Lehrer\/in\u201d (I am a teacher). Please note that you do not need an indefinite article here (ein, eine). Literally, you just say <strong><em>I am student<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>I am teacher<\/em><\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike English, in German you can always identify the gender of the people in their occupations. Usually, you add the suffix \u2013in to the masculine noun in order to indicate that the person who carries out that profession is a woman. Additionally, you need to apply the corresponding article when it is necessary.
