Like in basically every country, Germans enjoy\u00a0Spiele\u00a0<\/em>(n, games). Whether it’s\u00a0Videospiele\u00a0<\/em>(video games),\u00a0Brettspiele\u00a0<\/em>(board games),\u00a0Kartenspiele\u00a0<\/em>(card games), Germans like it! In this series, I want to look at some peculiarities of the German market and some Spiele\u00a0<\/em>that the Germans particularly enjoy. I won’t talk about\u00a0Sportarten\u00a0<\/em>(f, sports) here. If you want to learn about that, we’ve written about Swiss National Sports<\/a> before, which is quite an interesting topic, too! But now, let’s talk about the gaming scene in Germany, die Videospiele<\/em>!<\/p>\n

How do we talk about\u00a0Videospiele<\/em> or in German?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Because of its heavy international, English influence and the fact that you often play video games online with people from all over the world, talking about video games in Germany is full of English terms. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

das Videospiel, das Computerspiel das Game <\/em><\/strong>– game<\/p>\n

die Gamingwelt <\/em><\/strong>– gaming world<\/p>\n

der Gamer<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– gamer<\/p>\n

gamen\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>– to game<\/p>\n

spawnen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– to spawn<\/p>\n

der Ego-Shooter <\/em><\/strong>– First-Person Shooter (game genre)<\/p>\n

das RPG-Element<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– RPG element (RPG is the role-playing game genre)<\/p>\n

das Lag<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– lag<\/p>\n

die Latenz, die Latency <\/em><\/strong>– latency<\/p>\n

der Ladebildschirm, <\/em>das<\/strong> Loading Screen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– loading screen<\/p>\n

der Dungeon<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>– dungeon (as part of, for example, the dungeon crawler game genre)<\/p>\n

Regardless of these English terms, games are almost always completely localized to the German market, much like movies<\/a>. However, unlike movies,\u00a0Videospiele\u00a0<\/em>often keep their original name. And that’s probably for the best. If you translated some names, they would sound rather ridiculous. Anybody up for\u00a0das Rennen\u00a0<\/em>(race) in\u00a0Notwendigkeit von Geschwindigkeit: Professionelle Stra\u00dfe\u00a0<\/em>(Need for Speed: Pro Street)<\/a>? Yeah, no. That’s what I thought.<\/p>\n

Gaming\u00a0<\/em>is quite popular in Germany -with more than 30 million gamers, almost half of all Germans\u00a0game<\/em><\/a>. The split between men and women is also pretty much 50\/50. So it begs the question:<\/p>\n
