Whether it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Videospiele\u00a0<\/em>(video games),\u00a0<em>Brettspiele\u00a0<\/em>(board games),\u00a0<em>Kartenspiele\u00a0<\/em>(card games), Germans like it! In this series, I want to look at some peculiarities of the German market and some <em>Spiele\u00a0<\/em>that the Germans particularly enjoy. I won&#8217;t talk about\u00a0<em>Sportarten\u00a0<\/em>(f, sports) here. If you want to learn about that, we&#8217;ve written about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/swiss-national-sports-schwingen\/\">Swiss National Sports<\/a> before, which is quite an interesting topic, too! Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>das Videospiel, das Computerspiel das Game <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; game<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>die Gamingwelt <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; gaming world<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>der Gamer<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; gamer<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>gamen\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>&#8211; to game<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>spawnen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; to spawn<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>der Ego-Shooter <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; First-Person Shooter (game genre)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>das RPG-Element<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; RPG element (RPG is the role-playing game genre)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>das Lag<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; lag<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>die Latenz, die Latency <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; latency<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>der Ladebildschirm, <\/em>das<\/strong><em><strong> Loading Screen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; loading screen<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>der Dungeon<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; dungeon (as part of, for example, the dungeon crawler game genre)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>das Keyboard, die Tastatur<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; keyboard<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>killen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; to kill<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>losen<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; to lose<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>das Match<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; match<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>der Einzelspielermodus, das Singleplayer<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; singleplayer<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>der Mehrspielermodus, das Multiplayer<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; multiplayer<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of these English terms, games are almost always completely localized to the German market, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/movies-in-german\/\">much like movies<\/a>. However, unlike movies,\u00a0<em>Videospiele\u00a0<\/em>often keep their original name. And that&#8217;s probably for the best. If you translated some names, they would sound rather ridiculous. Anybody up for\u00a0<em>das Rennen\u00a0<\/em>(race) in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgames.de\/Need-for-Speed-Pro-Street-Spiel-24732\/Bilder\/Lustig-uebersetzt-10-Spieletitel-die-nicht-eingedeutscht-wurden-zum-Glueck-650790\/galerie\/705700\/\"><em>Notwendigkeit von Geschwindigkeit: Professionelle Stra\u00dfe\u00a0<\/em>(Need for Speed: Pro Street)<\/a>? Yeah, no. That&#8217;s what I thought.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gaming\u00a0<\/em>is quite popular in Germany -with more than 30 million gamers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.game.de\/guides\/jahresreport-der-deutschen-games-branche-2019\/01-gamer-in-deutschland\/\">almost half of all Germans\u00a0<em>game<\/em><\/a>. The split between men and women is also pretty much 50\/50. So it begs the question:<\/p>\n<h1><strong>What games do the Germans play?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Faszination Landwirtschafts-Simulator | Von E-Sport-Liga, Moddingkultur &amp; Fanfesten\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1tmjfXGm_4o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many international titles are popular in Germany, like <strong><em>Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft <\/em><\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><em>Counter Strike<\/em><\/strong>. Nintendo does really well with its own titles like Zelda, Pok\u00e9mon and Mario as well. However, the Germans have some particular <em>Vorlieben\u00a0<\/em>(f, preferences) as well.<\/p>\n<p>Across\u00a0<em>Spielekonsolen\u00a0<\/em>(f, game console) and <em>der PC\u00a0<\/em>(PC), the football simulation\u00a0<strong><em>FIFA\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is always successful.<\/p>\n<p>But when you only look at\u00a0<em>die PC-Spiele\u00a0<\/em>(PC games), you can see something interesting.\u00a0<strong><em>Simulationsspiele\u00a0<\/em>(n, simulation games)<\/strong> and <strong><em>Aufbauspiele\u00a0<\/em>(n, building games)<\/strong> as well as\u00a0<em>Echtzeit-Strategiespiele<\/em>, or <em>RTS-Spiele <\/em>(real-time strategy games) are particularly popular among <em>PC-Gamer. <\/em>Especially successful is the German-made <strong>Anno 1800, Tropico 6 <\/strong>and <strong><em>Landwirtschafts-Simulator <\/em>(Farming Simulator)<\/strong>. Also the long-standing\u00a0<em>Aufbauspielserie\u00a0<\/em>(building game series)\u00a0<strong><em>Die Siedler\u00a0<\/em>(The Settlers)<\/strong> is a product from German <em>Spieleentwickler <\/em>(m, game developers).<\/p>\n<p>Especially the\u00a0<em>Landwirtschafts-Simulator <\/em>enjoys incredible popularity. It even has its own annual convention, named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/farming-simulator.com\/newsArticle.php?lang=de&amp;country=de&amp;news_id=243\"><em>FarmCon<\/em><\/a> and even e-sports events!<\/p>\n<p>But, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamestar.de\/artikel\/warum-sind-strategiespiele-so-ein-deutsches-genre-das-sagen-entwickler,3309909.html\">what is it that attracts Germans so much to these simulation games?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Is it the <strong>stereotype of Germans<\/strong> being obsessed with details,\u00a0<em>die <\/em><em>Genauigkeit\u00a0<\/em>(accuracy), <em>die P\u00fcnktlichkeit\u00a0<\/em>(punctuality) and\u00a0<em>die Regeln\u00a0<\/em>(rules)?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps. These games definitely require you to manage, organize and optimize.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Germans have stuck to <strong>PC gaming rather than\u00a0<em>Spielekonsolen <\/em><\/strong>more than other countries. And these simulations are mostly exclusive to the PC due to their controls.<\/p>\n<p>It might also be because of <strong>strong strategic\u00a0<em>Brettspiele <\/em>(board games)<\/strong> that are <em>beliebt <\/em>(popular) in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>And I have to say,\u00a0<em>Die Siedler\u00a0<\/em>has always had a soft spot in my heart. The second game was the first <em>Computerspiel\u00a0<\/em>that I played as a kid on an old computer. And it holds up to this day!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about you?
