In my previous post I introduced you the modal verbs <strong><em>d\u00fcrfen<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>k\u00f6nnen<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>m\u00f6chten<\/em><\/strong>. This time we will have a look at the three remaining modals <strong><em>m\u00fcssen<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>sollen<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>wollen<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Modal verbs are a type of modifiers because they change the meaning of a sentence a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>m\u00fcssen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The modal verb <strong><em>m\u00fcssen<\/em><\/strong> expresses <em>NECESSITY<\/em> or <em>OBLIGATION<\/em>. It can be translated with \u2018must\u2019 or \u2018to have to\u2019. Compare the sentences below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wir gehen jetzt. \u2013 We are going now.<\/p>\n<p>Wir m\u00fcssen jetzt gehen. \u2013 We must go now. \/ We have to go now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sie bereitet sich auf eine Pr\u00fcfung vor. \u2013 She prepares for an examination. \/ She is preparing for an examination.<\/p>\n<p>Sie muss sich auf eine Pr\u00fcfung vorbereiten. \u2013 She must prepare for an examination. \/ She has to prepare for an examination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In negative sentences <strong><em>m\u00fcssen<\/em><\/strong> does not convey the meaning of prohibition. In negative sentences <strong><em>nicht m\u00fcssen<\/em><\/strong> means \u2018don\u2019t have to\u2019 or \u2018don\u2019t need to\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Du musst dir keine Sorgen machen. \u2013 You don\u2019t have to worry. \/ You don\u2019t need to worry.<\/p>\n<p>Ihr m\u00fcsst noch nicht gehen. \u2013 You don\u2019t have to go now. \/ You don\u2019t need to go now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>sollen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The modal verb <strong><em>sollen<\/em><\/strong> expresses <em>OBLIGATION<\/em> and <em>COMMANDS<\/em>. It can be translated with \u2018should\u2019 and \u2018to be supposed to\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ich zahle die Rechnung. \u2013 I pay the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Ich soll die Rechnung zahlen. \u2013 I am supposed to pay the bill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ich rufe dich an. \u2013 I will call you.<\/p>\n<p>Soll ich dich anrufen? \u2013 Should I call you?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The modal verb <strong><em>sollen<\/em><\/strong> can also be used to convey the idea of <em>UNCERTAINTY<\/em>, that is to say, when you make prediction about the future or when you are reporting what somebody else told you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Morgen soll es regnen. \u2013 Rain is forecast for tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Er soll wieder geheiratet haben. \u2013 They say he\u2019s got married again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>wollen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like <strong><em>m\u00f6chte<\/em><\/strong>, the modal verb <strong><em>wollen<\/em><\/strong> expresses INTENTION or DESIRE.
