When you learn a new language, you often might feel a bit insecure. You only know a limited number of words and you have only a sketchy understanding of grammar. You point to things and ask \u201cWas ist das?\u201d (vAs ist dAs? – What is that?) or ask \u201cWas bedeutet das?\u201d (vAs be-doy-tuht dAs? \u2013 What does that mean?). Somehow you resemble a child who is just learning his mother language. So, try to be a child again and ask as many questions as necessary. Even someone with a limited knowledge of a language can convey a broad range of meaning. The interrogative pronouns (question word) wen<\/em><\/strong> and wem<\/em><\/strong> are used with a preposition to refer only to persons. The interrogative was<\/em><\/strong> refers to things and ideas.<\/p>\n

You can also \u2018create\u2019 question words with \u201cwo-\u201d in order to ask for objects. You simply add the prefix wo-<\/em> to a preposition, e.g. wo+f\u00fcr = wof\u00fcr (for what) or wo+mit = womit (with what). Alternatively, you can ask \u201cf\u00fcr was\u201d instead of \u201cwof\u00fcr\u201d and \u201cmit was\u201d instead of \u201cwomit\u201d. Both are synonyms each.<\/p>\n
