I guess most of you wonder what Nickelback has to do with the German language or culture. Well to be honest, absolutely nothing! But after I have translated several German lyrics into English I want to turn the tables and translate English songs into German. The first reason why I decided to do this is because people often ask me: \u201cHow do you say that in German?\u201d Second, it probably might be interesting for you what to consider when you translate an English text into German on your own. And third, it is usually quite difficult to find German music and lyrics that are close to spoken German.<\/p>\n

German lyrics usually differ a lot from German everyday speech because when German words are set to music it often sounds schmalzig<\/em><\/strong> (schmaltzy). This is not the case in English. For example, though fairly poetic, the line \u201cone is such a lonely number\u201d (I have heard that in various songs) sounds beautiful in English, but the German version of it \u201cEins ist so eine einsame Zahl\u201d is neither anywhere near nice nor does it testify eloquence.<\/p>\n

As mentioned above, my intention is to show you what to consider when you translate English texts into German. With this, I hope that the German language becomes more accessible to you.<\/p>\n

Verse 1 \/ 1. Strophe<\/h4>\n

This time I wonder what it feels like to find the one in this life<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dieses Mal frage ich mich, wie es sich anf\u00fchlt den einen (Menschen)1<\/sup> in diesem Leben zu finden<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The one we all dream of but dreams just aren’t enough<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Den (Menschen), von dem wir alle tr\u00e4umen, aber Tr\u00e4ume sind einfach nicht genug<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1<\/sup>Translating \u201cthe one\u201d is a bit tricky here because in English the singer automatically refers to both sexes, that is, it does not matter whether the person is a female or male. This does not work in German because, in this context, there are two possible translations for \u201cthe one\u201d: \u201cdie eine\u201d<\/em><\/strong> to refer to females and \u201cder eine\u201d<\/em><\/strong> to refer to males. In order to keep the meaning neutral and to appeal to male as well as female listener alike you need to insert the word Mensch<\/em><\/strong> (person) in the German version.<\/span><\/p>\n

I find the one that I’ll spend forever with<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ich den eine (Menschen) finde, mit dem ich f\u00fcr immer zusammen sein m\u00f6chte<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

2<\/sup>The literal translation of this line is: \u201cAlso werde ich meinen eigenen Atem anhalten\u201d but that is redundant in German and does not sound good. Thus, \u201cAlso werde ich den Atem anhalten\u201d (So I\u2019ll be holding the breath) is entirely sufficient and natural.<\/span><\/p>\n
