Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\u2019s \u201cErlk\u00f6nig\u201d is a quite gloomy poem. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"230\">Wer reitet so sp\u00e4tdurch Nacht und Wind?Es ist der Vatermit seinem Kind;<\/p>\n<p>Er hat den Knaben<\/p>\n<p>wohl in dem Arm,<\/p>\n<p>Er fasst ihn sicher,<\/p>\n<p>er h\u00e4lt ihn warm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Sohn, was birst du<\/p>\n<p>so bang dein Gesicht?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSiehst, Vater, du<\/p>\n<p>den Erlk\u00f6nig nicht?<\/p>\n<p>Den Erlenk\u00f6nig<\/p>\n<p>mit Kron und Schweif?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Sohn,<\/p>\n<p>es ist ein Nebelstreif.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u201cDu liebes Kind,<\/p>\n<p>komm, geh mit mir!<\/p>\n<p>Gar sch\u00f6ne Spiele<\/p>\n<p>spiel ich mit dir;<\/p>\n<p>Manch bunte Blumen<\/p>\n<p>sind an dem Strand;<\/p>\n<p>Meine Mutter hat<\/p>\n<p>manch g\u00fclden Gewand.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Vater, mein Vater,<\/p>\n<p>und h\u00f6rest du nicht,<\/p>\n<p>Was Erlk\u00f6nig<\/p>\n<p>mir leise verspricht?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSei ruhig, bleibe ruhig,<\/p>\n<p>mein Kind!<\/p>\n<p>In d\u00fcrren Bl\u00e4ttern<\/p>\n<p>s\u00e4uselt der Wind!\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u201cWillst, feiner Knabe,<\/p>\n<p>du mit mir gehn?<\/p>\n<p>Meine T\u00f6chter<\/p>\n<p>sollen dich warten sch\u00f6n;<\/p>\n<p>Meine T\u00f6chter<\/p>\n<p>f\u00fchren den n\u00e4chtlichen Reihn<\/p>\n<p>Und wiegen und tanzen<\/p>\n<p>und singen dich ein.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Vater, mein Vater,<\/p>\n<p>und siehst du nicht dort<\/p>\n<p>Erlk\u00f6nigs T\u00f6chter<\/p>\n<p>am d\u00fcstern Ort?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Sohn, mein Sohn,<\/p>\n<p>ich she es genau;<\/p>\n<p>Es scheinen<\/p>\n<p>die alten Weiden so grau.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u00a0\u201cIch liebe dich,<\/p>\n<p>mich reizt deine sch\u00f6ne Gestalt;<\/p>\n<p>Und bist du nicht willig,<\/p>\n<p>So brauch\u2019 ich Gewalt.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMein Vater, mein Vater,<\/p>\n<p>jetzt fasst er mich an!<\/p>\n<p>Erlk\u00f6nig hat mir<\/p>\n<p>Ein Leids getan!\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dem Vater grauset&#8217;s,<\/p>\n<p>er reitet geschwind,<\/p>\n<p>Er h\u00e4lt in Armen<\/p>\n<p>das \u00e4chzende Kind,<\/p>\n<p>Erreicht den Hof<\/p>\n<p>mit M\u00fche und Not;<\/p>\n<p>In seinen Armen<\/p>\n<p>das Kind war tot.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"230\">Who rides, so late,through night and wind?It is the fatherwith his child.<\/p>\n<p>He has the boy<\/p>\n<p>well in his arm,<\/p>\n<p>He holds him safely,<\/p>\n<p>he keeps him warm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son, why do you<\/p>\n<p>hide your face so anxiously?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather, do you<\/p>\n<p>not see the Elfking?<\/p>\n<p>The Elfking<\/p>\n<p>with crown and tail?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son,<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s a wisp of fog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u201cYou dear child,<\/p>\n<p>come, go with me!<\/p>\n<p>Very lovely games<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll play with you;<\/p>\n<p>Some colourful flowers<\/p>\n<p>are on the beach,<\/p>\n<p>My mother has<\/p>\n<p>some golden robes.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father, my father,<\/p>\n<p>and don&#8217;t you hear<\/p>\n<p>What the Elfking<\/p>\n<p>quietly promises me?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe calm, stay calm,<\/p>\n<p>my child!<\/p>\n<p>The wind is rustling<\/p>\n<p>through withered leaves.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u201cDo you want<\/p>\n<p>to come with me, pretty boy?<\/p>\n<p>My daughters<\/p>\n<p>shall wait on you finely;<\/p>\n<p>My daughters<\/p>\n<p>will lead the nightly dance,<\/p>\n<p>And rock and dance<\/p>\n<p>and sing you to sleep.&#8221; \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father, my father,<\/p>\n<p>and don&#8217;t you see there<\/p>\n<p>The Elfking&#8217;s daughters<\/p>\n<p>in the gloomy place?\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son, my son,<\/p>\n<p>I see it clearly;<\/p>\n<p>There shimmer<\/p>\n<p>the old willows so grey.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI love you,<\/p>\n<p>your beautiful form entices me;<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;re not willing,<\/p>\n<p>then I will use force.\u201d \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father, my father,<\/p>\n<p>he&#8217;s grabbing me now!<\/p>\n<p>The Elfking has done<\/p>\n<p>me harm!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It horrifies the father;<\/p>\n<p>he swiftly rides on,<\/p>\n<p>He holds the moaning child<\/p>\n<p>in his arms,<\/p>\n<p>Reaches the farm<\/p>\n<p>with trouble and hardship;<\/p>\n<p>In his arms,<\/p>\n<p>the child was dead.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is another poem of my poem-series, so to speak.
