This time I decided to try my hand at translating Taylor Swift, who, as it turns out, is much wordier than Simon &amp; Garfunkel. I learned a lot, you know, in trying to capture, like, the vibe of the song. Viel Spa\u00df! (Oh, und einen gro\u00dfen DANKE SCH\u00d6N an Dinah Rothenberg, f\u00fcr ihre Hilfe bei der \u00dcbersetzung! Ich h\u00e4tte es alleine nicht machen k\u00f6nnnen.)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u00dcBERSETZGESUNGEN Episode 2 - Taylor Swift cover auf Deutsch\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w1Ayfi9b6uI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>I remember when we broke up the first time &#8211; <em>Als wir uns trennten zum ersten mal<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for me to realize that I&#8217;d have to omit significant pieces of the lyrics in order to fit all the German syllables into the rhythm of the song. &#8220;<em>Ich erinnere mich daran&#8221;<\/em> just doesn&#8217;t roll off the tongue like &#8220;I remember&#8221;. (After this, I&#8217;m amazed I managed <a title=\"erinner\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/5KGRhNciC9c?t=2m35s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to fit into the last <em>\u00dcbersetzgesungen<\/em><\/a>!) So my translation actually means, &#8220;When we broke up the first time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saying, &#8220;this is it, I&#8217;ve had enough,&#8221; &#8217;cause like &#8211; <em>Und sagten, &#8220;h<\/em><em>ey das war&#8217;s jetzt echt, ich hab wirklich genug,&#8221; ich meine<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here I had the opposite problem and was forced to add words to match the song. And so we have\u00a0<em>jetzt,<\/em> and\u00a0<em>echt,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>wirklich,\u00a0<\/em>meaning &#8220;now&#8221;, &#8220;seriously&#8221;, and &#8220;really&#8221;. And technically,\u00a0<em>ich meine<\/em> means &#8220;I mean&#8221; and not &#8220;&#8217;cause like&#8221;. &#8216;Cause like, there&#8217;s not really a translation for &#8220;&#8221;cause like&#8221;. Seriously. Look it up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We hadn&#8217;t seen each other in a month, &#8211; <em>Wir hatten uns seit Wochen nicht gesehen<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This line almost translated directly. I had to swap &#8220;a month&#8221; for &#8220;for weeks&#8221; to make it fit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you said you needed space &#8211; <em>Als du meintest, &#8220;ich brauche Raum.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What&#8217;s the difference between\u00a0<em>sagen<\/em> and\u00a0<em>meinen<\/em>? I&#8217;m not quite sure, but it sounded better here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What? &#8211; <i>Was?<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alle lieben diese Teil, oder?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Then you come around again and say &#8211; <em>Und pl\u00f6tzlich kommst du wieder und du sagst<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I had to heighten the drama by using\u00a0<em>pl\u00f6tzlich<\/em>, which means &#8220;suddenly&#8221;. &#8220;And suddenly you come gain and say&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Baby, I miss you and I swear I&#8217;m gonna change, trust me.&#8221; &#8211; &#8220;<i>Baby, ich vermiss dich und ich schw\u00f6r ich werd mich \u00e4ndern, vertau mir&#8221;<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A perfectly smooth translation!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remember how that lasted for a day? &#8211; <em>Weisst du noch, das hielt ja blo\u00df f\u00fcr einen Tag?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you guys know the word\u00a0<em>blo\u00df<\/em>? It&#8217;s an alternative to\u00a0<em>nur<\/em>, which means &#8220;only&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I say, &#8220;I hate you,&#8221; we break up, you call me, &#8220;I love you.&#8221; &#8211; Ich sag,\u00a0&#8220;Ich hass dich,&#8221; wieder Schluss, du rufst an, &#8220;Ich liebe dich.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another smooth translation. When people break up in German, they refer to it as\u00a0<em>Schluss machen<\/em>. To make an ending. So\u00a0<em>wieder Schluss<\/em> means &#8220;ending again&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We called it off again last night &#8211;\u00a0<em>Wir machten gestern wieder Schluss<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t find a good equivalent expression for &#8220;We called it off&#8221;, and so here we have\u00a0<em>Schluss machen<\/em> once again. But this time it&#8217;s in the past tense, hence the &#8220;t&#8221; in\u00a0<em>machten. &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>We made ending again yesterday.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>But this time I&#8217;m telling you, I&#8217;m telling you &#8211;\u00a0<em>Aber dieses Mal, ich sag dir was ich sag dir was<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can&#8217;t just say &#8220;<em>ich sag dir&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>for &#8220;I&#8217;m telling you.&#8221; It&#8217;s gotta be\u00a0<em>Ich sag dir was<\/em>, I&#8217;m telling you something, I&#8217;m telling you something.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are never ever ever getting back together &#8211;\u00a0<em>Wir werden niemals niemals niemals wieder zusammen kommen<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My translation literally means &#8220;We will never ever ever come together again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me &#8211;\u00a0<em>Geh halt sprich mit deinen Freunden, meinen, oder mir<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is one of the first lines I translated. It turns out to be a good use of the dative case. Be sure to add an &#8220;n&#8221; to the words that come after\u00a0<em>mit<\/em><em>!\u00a0<\/em>And &#8220;<em>geh halt&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>is a good expression too. It basically means, &#8220;just go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Like, ever. &#8211;\u00a0<em>Also, niemals.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Seriously.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;m really gonna miss you picking fights &#8211;\u00a0<em>Ich werd&#8217;s vermissen, wie du Stress anf\u00e4ngst<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This line had to change, as &#8220;picking fights&#8221; isn&#8217;t really a thing in German. But it seems like in Germany people in relationships are always dealing with\u00a0<em>Stress\u00a0<\/em>in their\u00a0<em>Beziehungen<\/em>. And so &#8220;starting stress&#8221;, as Taylor would accuse her ex in German, is pretty much the same as picking a fight.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>And me falling for it screaming that I&#8217;m right &#8211; <em>Und wie\u00a0Ich mitmach und ich schreie, &#8220;Ich hab Recht&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, &#8220;falling for it&#8221; didn&#8217;t translate very easily. The word I chose is\u00a0<em>mitmach<\/em>, which means &#8220;go along with&#8221;. Also,\u00a0<em>Ich hab Recht\u00a0<\/em>means \u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m right&#8221;, though grammatically it looks more like &#8220;I have right.&#8221; I can&#8217;t help but notice how similar this is to the Spanish way of saying &#8220;I&#8217;m right&#8221;, &#8220;<em>Tengo raz\u00f3n.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>That literally translates to &#8220;I have reason&#8221;. I wonder what that says about American culture vs. European culture. &#8220;Right&#8221; is apparently something that we\u00a0<em>are,\u00a0<\/em>whereas for them it&#8217;s something that they\u00a0<em>have<\/em>.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>And you would hide away and find your peace of mind &#8211; \u00a0<em>Und du ziehst dich zur\u00fcck um deine Ruhe zu finden,<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My translation here is more like, &#8220;And you pull back to find your quiet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With some indie record that&#8217;s much cooler than mine &#8211;\u00a0<em>mit irgendso eine Indie-Musik, die ja so viel cooler ist als meine.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>You call me up again tonight &#8211;\u00a0<em>Du rufst mich heute wieder an<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I used to think that we were forever ever &#8211;\u00a0<em>Damals dachte ich, das mit uns w\u00e4r f\u00fcr immer, immer<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And I used to say, &#8220;Never say never&#8230;&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Und damals sagte ich, &#8220;Sag niemals nie&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Uggg&#8230; so he calls me up and he&#8217;s like, &#8220;I still love you,&#8221;\u00a0And I&#8217;m like&#8230; &#8220;I just&#8230; I mean this is exhausting, you know, like, we are never getting back together. Like, ever&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Und gestern ruft er mich schon wieder an um zu sagen &#8220;ich liebe dich noch&#8221; und boah eh langsam wird es mir echt zu anstrengend, weisst du? Ich meine, wir werden halt einfach nie wieder zusammen kommen. Also niemals.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here is my best attempt at sounding like a German twenty-year-old girl who&#8217;s sick and tired of her ex-boyfriend.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No! &#8211;\u00a0<em>Nein!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There you have it!
