How much is enough? Es kommt natürlich darauf an. Until you’re actually learning the language, you can’t know how much was enough. But the fact is, there is no correct way to learn a language. Jeder Mensch muss sein eigenen Weg finden. Do you want to learn German in order to work in a particular industry? Or maybe you’re just a big fan of Rammstein and want to know what the heck they’re singing about. And if you swear you want it enough, but still aren’t progressing?

For me, it took years of studying Spanish in school before I made any commitment to really learning the language. My lack of understanding is what motivated me to study abroad, and the growth I felt while there motivated me to continue learning languages afterwards. I don’t recommend that anyone learn a foreign language by first spending years ineffectively studying a different foreign language. Das war aber mein Weg.

hilfreich – (adjective) helpful

“Es kommt darauf an.” – (expression) “It depends.”

Grund – (noun) reason

Auslandssemester – (noun) semester abroad

“What do you recommend I do to learn a foreign language?” Ganz oft wird mir diese Frage gestellt.
