When I was learning German at school we learnt a lot about German <strong>Politik <\/strong>(politics), <strong>Geschichte <\/strong>(history) and the <strong>Umwelt <\/strong>(environment).\u00a0 Although we could speak a lot about those particular subjects they didn\u2019t really help me when I first moved to Germany, as they don\u2019t usually come up in everyday conversation. Own photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Hallo hier ist Larissa Arnold&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hello Larissa Arnold here&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Ich habe eine Frage \u00fcber meine Internet\/Strom\/Rechnung&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a question about my internet\/electricity\/bill&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(I always need this sentence every time there\u2019s a problem with something and I have to ring the company up.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">How to make an appointment \u2013 on the phone or in person:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Hallo ich m\u00f6chte bitte einen Termin&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hello I would like to make an appointment please&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Ich w\u00fcrde gerne einen Tisch um neun Uhr reservieren f\u00fcr zwei Personen &#8220;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would like to book a table at 9 o clock for two people&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">For any dietary requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Ist es vegatarisch\/vegan?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is it vegetarian\/vegan?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Sind N\u00fcsse drin? Ich habe eine Nussallergie&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are there nuts in it? I have a nut allergy&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Nusse<\/strong> can be swapped with whatever the allergy is such as <strong>Milch, Eier, Fisch) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Shopping questions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Wie viel kostet das?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How much does it cost?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Gibt es das noch in gr\u00f6sse S\/M\/L?&#8221; \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201eIs there still a size S\/M\/L available? \u201c<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">When you need help:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Entschuldigen Sie&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Excuse me&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Note the use of <strong>Sie<\/strong> as you are asking a stranger and therefore it is formal)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0&#8220;Ich habe mich verlaufen&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am lost\u201d \/ \u201cI have got lost&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Another common mistake is saying <strong>Ich bin verloren<\/strong> which does literally translate to \u201cI am lost\u201d but isn\u2019t completely correct. It took me a long time to get used to having to call people, especially with people I didn\u2019t know to make appointments and so on.
