Valentine\u2019s Day is coming up and so I have all the vocabulary you need to get you through the day.<\/p>\n

There are so many fields in Germany where you can pick your own flowers! (You still have to pay but it’s a lot cheaper and perfect for Valentines day). Own photo.<\/p><\/div>\n

Here are some typical German Kosenamen<\/strong> (pet names):<\/p>\n

Schatz\/Schatzi<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Dear<\/p>\n

Mausi<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Maus<\/strong> translates to Mouse, so this would literally translate to \u201cMousey\u201d – although in English it doesn\u2019t sound so nice in Germany it\u2019s a very common and affectionate name!<\/p>\n

If Valentinstag <\/strong>goes well then perhaps you have a new boyfriend\/girlfriend! The German word for boyfriend\/girlfriend in German is Freund\/Freundin<\/strong>, which can easily get mixed up with friend (also Freund\/Freundin<\/strong>). I always mixed these two words up and although I wanted to say I was meeting a friend, I always ended up saying I was meeting my boyfriend by accident. Here\u2019s how to say it correctly:<\/p>\n

“Mein Freund” \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 “my boyfriend”<\/p>\n

“Ich treffe mich mit einem \u00a0Freund von mir”<\/strong>\u00a0“I am meeting up with a friend”<\/p>\n

“Ich treffe mich mit Freunden”<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0“I am meeting up with freinds”<\/p>\n

So the lesson is: If you want to say boy\/girlfriend you say \u201eMein<\/span> Freund\/Freundin\u201d<\/strong>, and if you want to say a friend then you say \u201cmit einem<\/span> Freund\/Freundin von mir<\/span>\u201d.<\/strong> \u00a0There are of course Ausnahme<\/strong>\u00a0(exceptions) just to make it more confusing, for example you could say \u201cMeine Freundin\u201d<\/strong> and just mean \u00a0\u201cBest friend\u201d, but if you stick with the sentences above you should always say what you mean!<\/p>\n
