I\u2019ve gone a little off track with the untranslatable German words lately, so here are two for good measure! Even though I\u2019ve already written about roughly 5,567 of them, rest assured there are always more quirky, fascinating German words to be discovered. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

These two words revolve around the theme of Der Alkohol<\/strong> – alcohol.<\/p>\n

1. Die Schnapsidee<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What does Schnapsidee mean?<\/span>
\nA Schnapsidee describes a really daft idea you had while you were drunk \u2013 or, more commonly, a really daft idea you had when you were sober but that was so stupid <\/em>you might as well have been drunk when you had it. It\u2019s basically used to describe any kind of silly, foolish or unrealistic ideas.<\/p>\n

What is the literal translation of Schnapsidee?<\/span>
\nIts literal meaning is schnapps idea<\/strong>, referring to schnapps, the spirit. It is made up of the words der Schnaps<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 schnapps<\/em>, and die Idee<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 idea. <\/em>In Germany, Schnaps <\/em><\/strong>is a generic term for any clear spirits distilled from fermented fruits, which is probably why the word is Schnapsidee<\/em>, to refer to alcohol in general, and not Bieridee<\/em>, for instance (although die Bieridee<\/em> sounds good too, right?!).<\/p>\n

How would you use Schnapsidee in a sentence?<\/span>
\n“Was ist denn das f\u00fcr eine Schnapsidee?!” \u2013 What sort of a schnapps idea is this?!<\/em>
\n“Diese Schnapsidee kannst du vergessen!” \u2013 You can forget about that schnapps idea!<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Die Alkoholleiche<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What does Alkoholleiche mean?<\/span>
\nAn Alkoholleiche is a person who has passed out from drinking too much.<\/p>\n

What is the literal translation of Alkoholleiche?<\/span>
\nIts literal meaning is alcohol corpse.<\/strong> Quite appropriate, isn’t it? It is made up of the words der Alkohol<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 alcohol<\/em>, and die Leiche<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 corpse<\/em>. Another word that\u2019s often used instead is die Schnapsleiche \u2013 <\/em><\/strong>the schnapps corpse. <\/em><\/p>\n

How would you use Alkoholleiche in a sentence?<\/span>
\n“Nach nur 125 Minuten musste die erste Alkoholleiche am Oktoberfest behandelt werden” – The first alcohol corpse had to be seen to after just 125 minutes at Oktoberfest<\/em>.
\n“Wie soll ich die Schnapsleiche aufwachen?!” \u2013 How am I supposed to wake up the schnaps corpse?!

What is the nearest English equivalent to Alkoholleiche?<\/span>
\nWe just don’t have any nouns as cool as Alkoholleiche<\/em> in English. But in context, it might be used to refer to an intoxicated\/hungover friend in a light-hearted, teasing manner, so an equivalent might be: “How am I supposed to wake this pisshead up?!”<\/p>\n

I can not for the life of me think of an English equivalent (noun) for Schnapsidee<\/strong>. If anyone has one, I’ll add it to this post!<\/p>\n
