Even though I\u2019ve already written about roughly 5,567 of them, rest assured there are always more quirky, fascinating German words to be discovered. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>These two words revolve around the theme of <strong>Der Alkohol<\/strong> &#8211; alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1. Photo by andrew-garton on flickr.com under CC BY-SA 2.0<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What does Schnapsidee mean?<\/span><br \/>\nA Schnapsidee describes a really daft idea you had while you were drunk \u2013 or, more commonly, a really daft idea you had when you were sober but that was <em>so stupid <\/em>you might as well have been drunk when you had it. It\u2019s basically used to describe any kind of silly, foolish or unrealistic ideas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the literal translation of Schnapsidee?<\/span><br \/>\nIts literal meaning is <strong>schnapps idea<\/strong>, referring to schnapps, the spirit. It is made up of the words <strong><em>der Schnaps<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 schnapps<\/em>, and <strong><em>die Idee<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 idea. <\/em>In Germany, <strong><em>Schnaps <\/em><\/strong>is a generic term for any clear spirits distilled from fermented fruits, which is probably why the word is <em>Schnapsidee<\/em>, to refer to alcohol in general, and not <em>Bieridee<\/em>, for instance (although <em>die Bieridee<\/em> sounds good too, right?!).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How would you use Schnapsidee in a sentence?<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;Was ist denn das f\u00fcr eine Schnapsidee?!&#8221; \u2013 <em>What sort of a schnapps idea is this?!<\/em><br \/>\n&#8220;Diese Schnapsidee kannst du vergessen!&#8221; \u2013 <em>You can forget about that schnapps idea!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now onto the second word. If you have too much <em>Schnaps<\/em> at a party you might end up one of these&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2. Photo by 24293932@N00 on flickr.com under CC BY-SA 2.0<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What does Alkoholleiche mean?<\/span><br \/>\nAn Alkoholleiche is a person who has passed out from drinking too much.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the literal translation of Alkoholleiche?<\/span><br \/>\nIts literal meaning is <strong>alcohol corpse.<\/strong> Quite appropriate, isn&#8217;t it? It is made up of the words <strong><em>der Alkohol<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 alcohol<\/em>, and <strong><em>die Leiche<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 corpse<\/em>. Another word that\u2019s often used instead is <strong><em>die Schnapsleiche \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>the schnapps corpse. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How would you use Alkoholleiche in a sentence?<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;Nach nur 125 Minuten musste die erste Alkoholleiche am Oktoberfest behandelt werden&#8221; &#8211; <em>The first alcohol corpse had to be seen to after just 125 minutes at Oktoberfest<\/em>.<br \/>\n&#8220;Wie soll ich die Schnapsleiche aufwachen?!&#8221; \u2013 <em>How am I supposed to wake up the schnaps corpse?!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the nearest English equivalent to Alkoholleiche?<\/span><br \/>\nWe just don&#8217;t have any nouns as cool as <em>Alkoholleiche<\/em> in English. But in context, it might be used to refer to an intoxicated\/hungover friend in a light-hearted, teasing manner, so an equivalent might be: &#8220;How am I supposed to wake this pisshead up?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I can not for the life of me think of an English equivalent (noun) for <strong>Schnapsidee<\/strong>.
