If is often said that German people are very p\u00fcnktlich <\/strong>(on time), I\u2019ve written a list of basic vocabulary to help you tell the time, and to ask what the time is in German so that you\u2019ll never be sp\u00e4t<\/strong> (late)!<\/p>\n

First of all here are a few numbers in German:<\/p>\n

And now for the tricky part:<\/p>\n

If someone tells you to meet them at halb 12<\/strong> you would meet them at half 12\/12:30 right? Wrong. You would actually be meeting them at 11:30! In German if you say halb …<\/strong> it just means \u201chalf\u201d and not \u201chalf past\u201d. For example:<\/p>\n

Halb eins<\/strong> = 12:30<\/p>\n

Halb drei<\/strong> = 2:30<\/p>\n

Halb elf<\/strong> = 10:30<\/p>\n

So there are the basics of telling the time, hopefully you will always be p\u00fcnktlich<\/strong> when meeting someone! I got the idea for this post from a friend who has a very interesting clock in their flat \u2013 eine bayerische Uhr<\/strong>. What makes this Bavarian clock so special is that it ticks r\u00fcckw\u00e4rts <\/strong>(backwards) and you have to read it spiegelverkehrt <\/strong>(mirror image).<\/p>\n

The reason for this is because Willy Brandt (Politician and Leader of the Social democratic Party) said\u00a0“in Bayern ticken\u00a0die Uhren anders”\u00a0<\/strong>(in Bavaria the clocks tick differently). Someone interpreted this and created the Bavarian clock.\u00a0\u00a0If you are ever in Munich take a look at Isartor\u2019s clock \u2013 and you will notice that the clock is indeed a Bavarian clock that ticks backwards!<\/p>\n
