Servus, I got my inspiration for this post over on the Greek blog (which you can find here<\/a> if you\u2019re also interested in learning Greek). Hobbies are an important part of everyday life and are a great way to start up a conversation, whether it\u2019s horse riding, painting, reading, or just going to the cinema!<\/p>\n

The German language has taken the English word \u201chobby\u201d, making it one less German word for you to remember. If you wanted to ask \u201cwhat are your hobbies?\u201d in German it would be \u201cWas sind deine Hobbys?\u201d<\/strong>. However you could also say \u201cWas sind deine Interessen?\u201d \u2013 <\/strong>\u201cWhat are your interests?\u201d.<\/p>\n

Here are a few hobbies I translated into German, if you have one that isn\u2019t up here than leave me a comment and I can translate it for you!<\/p>\n

If you want to ask someone what their favourite hobby is (maybe they\u2019ve listed you a hundred hobbies already and you want to narrow it down) then ask \u201cwas ist dein Lieblingshobby?\u201d\/\u201dwas ist deine Lieblingsinteresse?\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0The word\u00a0lieblings\u00a0<\/strong>means\u00a0\u201cfavourite\u201d so you can use this for other questions too, such as Lieblingsessen <\/strong>(favourite food), Lieblingsfach<\/strong> (favourite subject), Lieblingsbuch<\/strong> (favourite book) and so on.<\/p>\n

When someone asks you what your hobbies are, you can reply by saying \u201cMeine Hobbys sind…\u201d <\/strong>(My hobbies are…) or if you just have one hobby then say \u201cMein Hobby ist…\u201d<\/strong> (My hobby is…). In reply to your favourite hobby you can say \u201cMein Lieblingshobby ist…\u201d<\/strong> (My favourite hobby is…), or if you\u2019re indecisive and can\u2019t pick one favourite hobby you can reply \u201cIch liebe alle meine Hobbys, ich kann mich nicht entscheiden!\u201d <\/strong>(I love all of my hobbies, I can\u2019t decide!).<\/p>\n

Now that you know what to say here is an example of how the conversation could go:<\/p>\n

Person 1: Was sin<\/strong>d<\/strong> d<\/strong>eine Hobbys? \/ Was sin<\/strong>d<\/strong> deine Interessen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Note that the question has \u201esind\u201d<\/strong> instead of \u201cist\u201d<\/strong> in it which means it is plural)<\/p>\n

Person 2: Meine Hobbys sind Schwimmen und ins Kino gehen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Person 1: Ich mag auch Schwimmen! Was ist dein Lieblingshobby?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Person 2: Mein Lieblingshobby ist Schwimmen, ich schwimme drei mal pro Woche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t written the translation so see if you can understand what they\u2019re saying to each other!<\/p>\n
