People always have plenty of ideas for things to do on Silvester<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s Eve)<\/em> \u2013 auf eine Party gehen<\/strong> (go to a party)<\/em>, Zuhause feiern<\/strong> (celebrate at home),<\/em> Feuerwerk anschauen<\/strong> (watch the fireworks)<\/em> \u2013 but what about on New Year\u2019s Day?<\/p>\n

New Year\u2019s Day is called der Neujahrstag<\/strong> in German. Like in many other countries, Neujahrstag<\/em> is a public holiday in Germany, so many businesses, banks, post offices and other stores are closed on this day.<\/p>\n

So what kinds of things could you do on Neujahrstag<\/em>? Here are some ideas \u2013 in German \u2013 to inspire you!<\/p>\n

Visit family and friends<\/strong> – Freunde und Familie besuchen<\/p>\n

Play board or card games<\/strong> – Brettspiele oder Kartenspiele spielen<\/p>\n

\nIn Germany it is common to send Neujahrskarten \u2013 new year\u2019s cards \u2013 to friends and family. These are sometimes sent instead of Christmas cards, and include a summary of the sender\u2019s year, to keep friends and family up to date with all their news. It\u2019s another way to reflect on the year gone by, and share your achievements, news, and ups and downs with loved ones. Phrases used in Neujahrskarten include Ein gutes und gesegnetes neues Jahr!<\/strong> (A good and blessed New Year!<\/em>) and Prosit Neujahr!<\/strong> (Happy New Year!<\/em>).<\/p>\n
