Last week, I wanted to make a post as well, but I was in Rome for a week and just couldn&#8217;t find the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the previous weeks, we went to the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-6-bayerischer-wald\/\">Bayerischer Wald<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-5-harz\/\">Harz<\/a>,<\/em><em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-4-eifel\/\">Eifel<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-3-muritz\/\">M\u00fcritz<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-2-berchtesgaden\/\">Berchtesgaden<\/a>, <\/em>and the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-1-schwarzwald\/\">Schwarzwald<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0Today, it is time for the\u00a0<em>S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/em>!<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"adjust-img-width\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\" aria-label=\"800px Karte Nationalparks Deutschland High\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"712\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The National Parks in Germany (Image by Lencer at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY SA 3.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpark-saechsische-schweiz.de\/\">Der Nationalpark S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Similar to the Nationalpark\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-5-harz\/\">Harz<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0<em>S\u00e4chsische Schweiz\u00a0<\/em>(Saxon Switzerland)\u00a0was established on October 1, 1990 as part of the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>program of the former\u00a0<em>German Democratic Republic (GDR) or\u00a0<em>DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik<\/em>).\u00a0<\/em>It is part of the\u00a0<em>Elbsandsteingebirge\u00a0<\/em>(Elbe sandstone mountains), which crosses the border into the Czech Republic, which is also protected. There, it is called the\u00a0<em>B\u00f6hmische Schweiz\u00a0<\/em>(Bohemian Switzerland).<\/p>\n<p>But what about its name? Before, it was called &#8220;Mei\u00dfner Hochland&#8221;. Why is it called\u00a0<em>S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/em>\u00a0today?<em>\u00a0<\/em>Sure, it is in\u00a0<em>Bundesland Sachsen\u00a0<\/em>(Federal State Saxony), but\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Schweiz\u00a0<\/em>(Switzerland) is far, far away. Well, the story goes that at the end of the 18th century, two artists from Switzerland who studied in Dresden looked out over this landscape, and were reminded of their home country. The term was popularized from there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What is special about the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark S\u00e4chsische Schweiz?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 546px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nationalpark_S%C3%A4chsische_Schweiz#\/media\/File:Affensteine1.jpg\" aria-label=\"1280px Affensteine1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\"  alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"357\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/39\/Affensteine1.jpg\/1280px-Affensteine1.jpg\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The typical view you will find in the S\u00e4chsische Schweiz (Image by Prazak at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY 2.5)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Very clearly, the special feature of this park are the\u00a0<em>Felsen\u00a0<\/em>(rocks) everywhere. The\u00a0<em>Lilienstein\u00a0<\/em>is merely 415\u00a0m (1360 ft) high, for example. The highest peak of the <em>Elbsteingebirge<\/em>\u00a0reaches 723 m (2370 ft).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Affensteine.jpg\" aria-label=\"1024px Affensteine\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\"  alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"356\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/33\/Affensteine.jpg\/1024px-Affensteine.jpg\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Affensteine (Image by Prazak at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY 2.5)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Famous as well in the\u00a0<em>Gebirge\u00a0<\/em>are the\u00a0<em>Affensteine\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;Monkey Rocks&#8221;), a chain of rocks like the one above. The name probably comes from the old German word <em>Auf\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0<em>Uhu\u00a0<\/em>(eagle owl), that nestled itself in these rocks. \u00a0Thus they were called\u00a0<em>Aufensteine<\/em>, which later became the more easily pronounced\u00a0<em>Affensteine<\/em>.
