{"id":7210,"date":"2016-04-30T22:11:20","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T22:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/?p=7210"},"modified":"2017-11-30T15:20:47","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T15:20:47","slug":"german-nationalparks-part-9-jasmund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-9-jasmund\/","title":{"rendered":"German Nationalparks \u2013 Part 9: Jasmund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In previous months, we have already explored a large part of the <em>gesch\u00fctzte Sch\u00f6nheit\u00a0<\/em>(protected beauty) of German nature.\u00a0We went to the <em>windige K\u00fcsten\u00a0<\/em>(windy shores) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-8-die-wattenmeer-nationalparks\/\">Wattenmeer<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0<em>eindrucksvolle Felsen\u00a0<\/em>(impressive rocks) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-7-sachsische-schweiz\/\">S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0<em>Jahrhunderte alten W\u00e4lder\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(centuries old forests) of the<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-6-bayerischer-wald\/\">Bayerischer Wald<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Erzminen\u00a0<\/em>(ore mines) in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-5-harz\/\">Harz<\/a>,<\/em><em>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/em><em>Tiger\u00a0<\/em>(tigers) roaming around in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-4-eifel\/\">Eifel<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0<em>Tausend Seen\u00a0<\/em>(thousand lakes) of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-3-muritz\/\">M\u00fcritz<\/a><\/em>, the <em>hohe Gebirge\u00a0<\/em>(high mountain ranges) of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-2-berchtesgaden\/\">Berchtesgaden<\/a>, <\/em>and the <em>atemberaubende Natur\u00a0<\/em>(stunning nature) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-1-schwarzwald\/\">Schwarzwald<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, we will discuss another wonderful park, with its own beautiful features &#8211;\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em><em>Jasmund,\u00a0<\/em>in the north east, right at the\u00a0<em>Ostsee\u00a0<\/em>(Baltic Sea).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"adjust-img-width\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\" aria-label=\"800px Karte Nationalparks Deutschland High\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"712\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The National Parks in Germany (Image by Lencer at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY SA 3.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpark-jasmund.de\/\"><strong><em>Der Nationalpark\u00a0Jasmund<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>was established on September 12, 1990. It is the smallest German national park, with only 3003 hectares (ca. 7400 acres), and is located on the <em>Halbinsel\u00a0<\/em>(peninsula)\u00a0<em>Jasmund<\/em> on the <em>Insel\u00a0<\/em>(island)\u00a0<em>R\u00fcgen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century, huge\u00a0<em>Findlinge\u00a0<\/em>(boulders) were removed to expand docks. This allowed the\u00a0<em>Ostsee\u00a0<\/em>to crash into the\u00a0<em>Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>(chalk cliffs) with full force, as the\u00a0<em>Findlinge\u00a0<\/em>could not break the waves anymore. With every storm, even today, the\u00a0<em>Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>are reduced, because the water always tears some of the\u00a0<em>Kreide<\/em>\u00a0(chalk)<em>\u00a0<\/em>into the sea. This also means that the landmass of the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>is shrinking every time&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is special about the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0Jasmund?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>Die Kreidefelsen<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The obvious specialty of\u00a0<em>Nationalpark Jasmund\u00a0<\/em>are the\u00a0<em>Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>(Chalk Rocks). The most impressive is the\u00a0<em>K\u00f6nigsstuhl\u00a0<\/em>(King&#8217;s Chair), with an height of 118 m (ca. 360 ft)! As I said above, through storms these\u00a0<em>Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>are eroded bit by bit, and that is a shame for such a rare sight. The park is called <em>Jasmund<\/em>, after the peninsula it is located on. It is one of the most unknown parks of Germany, even though it attracts more than a million visitors every year! How is this possible? The\u00a0<em>Nationalparkverwaltung\u00a0<\/em>(national park administration) does not have a lot of money for advertising to tourists. And the\u00a0<em>Touristikbranche\u00a0<\/em>(tourist industry) mostly advertises with\u00a0<em>Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>K\u00f6nigsstuhl<\/em>, the main attractions of the park. The main task of the park is to make sure that all these\u00a0<em>Besucher\u00a0<\/em>(visitors) do not destroy the nature it is supposed to protect!<\/p>\n<p>In the video below you can see the\u00a0<em>K\u00f6nigsstuhl\u00a0<\/em>and how it is connected to the\u00a0<em>Besucherzentrum<\/em>.
