In previous months, we have already explored a large part of the gesch\u00fctzte Sch\u00f6nheit\u00a0<\/em>(protected beauty) of German nature.\u00a0We went to the windige K\u00fcsten\u00a0<\/em>(windy shores) of the\u00a0Wattenmeer<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0eindrucksvolle Felsen\u00a0<\/em>(impressive rocks) of the\u00a0S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0Jahrhunderte alten W\u00e4lder\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(centuries old forests) of the\u00a0Bayerischer Wald<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0Erzminen\u00a0<\/em>(ore mines) in the\u00a0Harz<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/em>Tiger\u00a0<\/em>(tigers) roaming around in the\u00a0Eifel<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Tausend Seen\u00a0<\/em>(thousand lakes) of\u00a0M\u00fcritz<\/a><\/em>, the hohe Gebirge\u00a0<\/em>(high mountain ranges) of\u00a0Berchtesgaden<\/a>, <\/em>and the atemberaubende Natur\u00a0<\/em>(stunning nature) of the\u00a0Schwarzwald<\/a><\/em>. We discovered the\u00a0bedrohten<\/em>\u00a0Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>(threatened chalk cliffs) of\u00a0Jasmund<\/a><\/em>. Last time, we visited\u00a0Hainich<\/a><\/em>, and its\u00a0Alte Buchen\u00a0<\/em>(old beeches).<\/p>\n

Moving to the next park, not far from\u00a0Hainich<\/em>, is\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Der Nationalpark\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

On January 1, 2004 the\u00a0Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>(beech forests) south of the\u00a0Edersee\u00a0<\/em>became officially\u00a0a\u00a0Nationalpark<\/em>, and was opened on May 25 of the same year. Much like park\u00a0Hainich\u00a0<\/em>that we discussed last time, this park was primarily founded to protect the old\u00a0Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>found here.<\/p>\n

The name\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee\u00a0<\/em>comes from the two parts that the\u00a0Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>encompasses. There is the\u00a0Kellerwald\u00a0<\/em>(“Cellar Forest”), which includes the ancient\u00a0Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>the park seeks to protect. And there is the\u00a0Edersee<\/em>, a lake right above the park. It is not included in the\u00a0Nationalpark<\/em>, but is still an important Point of Interest, and so it is included in the name.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>is also part of the larger\u00a0Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em> (Nature Park\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>).<\/p>\n

What is special about the\u00a0Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee\u00a0<\/em>serves primarily to protect its\u00a0Buchenwald\u00a0<\/em>(beech forest). Just like the parks Hainich\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Jasmund<\/em>, the\u00a0forest in Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>\u00a0is under the same UNESCO Weltnaturerbe\u00a0<\/em>(World Heritage \u2013 Natural Site).\u00a0These old beech forests are extremely rare nowadays, and the\u00a0Nationalparks\u00a0<\/em>allow them to develop again in the way they did thousands of years ago. Predominantly, it is the\u00a0Rotbuche\u00a0<\/em>(European beech) that\u00a0grows in park\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Even though it is slightly outside of the park, the\u00a0Edersee\u00a0<\/em>is still definitely worth a visit and should be mentioned. It has an impressive\u00a0Staudamm\u00a0<\/em>(dam) with an interesting history and boat tours on the lake. There is also another\u00a0Baumkronenpfad\u00a0<\/em>(treetop walkway), which we have also seen in other\u00a0Nationalparks. <\/em>You\u00a0cannot really miss out on the\u00a0Edersee\u00a0<\/em>while visiting the\u00a0Nationalpark<\/em>!<\/p>\n
