{"id":7319,"date":"2016-05-31T20:37:55","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T20:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/?p=7319"},"modified":"2016-06-27T15:47:05","modified_gmt":"2016-06-27T15:47:05","slug":"german-nationalparks-part-11-kellerwald-edersee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-11-kellerwald-edersee\/","title":{"rendered":"German Nationalparks \u2013 Part 11: Kellerwald-Edersee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In previous months, we have already explored a large part of the <em>gesch\u00fctzte Sch\u00f6nheit\u00a0<\/em>(protected beauty) of German nature.\u00a0We went to the <em>windige K\u00fcsten\u00a0<\/em>(windy shores) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-8-die-wattenmeer-nationalparks\/\">Wattenmeer<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0<em>eindrucksvolle Felsen\u00a0<\/em>(impressive rocks) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-7-sachsische-schweiz\/\">S\u00e4chsische Schweiz<\/a>, <\/em>the\u00a0<em>Jahrhunderte alten W\u00e4lder\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(centuries old forests) of the<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-6-bayerischer-wald\/\">Bayerischer Wald<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Erzminen\u00a0<\/em>(ore mines) in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-5-harz\/\">Harz<\/a>,<\/em><em>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/em><em>Tiger\u00a0<\/em>(tigers) roaming around in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-4-eifel\/\">Eifel<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0<em>Tausend Seen\u00a0<\/em>(thousand lakes) of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-3-muritz\/\">M\u00fcritz<\/a><\/em>, the <em>hohe Gebirge\u00a0<\/em>(high mountain ranges) of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-2-berchtesgaden\/\">Berchtesgaden<\/a>, <\/em>and the <em>atemberaubende Natur\u00a0<\/em>(stunning nature) of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-1-schwarzwald\/\">Schwarzwald<\/a><\/em>. We discovered the\u00a0<em>bedrohten<\/em><em>\u00a0Kreidefelsen\u00a0<\/em>(threatened chalk cliffs) of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-9-jasmund\/\">Jasmund<\/a><\/em>. Last time, we visited\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-nationalparks-part-10-hainich\/\">Hainich<\/a><\/em>, and its\u00a0<em>Alte Buchen\u00a0<\/em>(old beeches).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Moving to the next park, not far from\u00a0<em>Hainich<\/em>, is\u00a0<em>Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"adjust-img-width\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\" aria-label=\"800px Karte Nationalparks Deutschland High\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"712\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9d\/Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\/800px-Karte_Nationalparks_Deutschland_high.png\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The National Parks in Germany (Image by Lencer at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY SA 3.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalpark-kellerwald-edersee.de\/\"><strong><em>Der Nationalpark\u00a0Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On January 1, 2004 the\u00a0<em>Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>(beech forests) south of the\u00a0<em>Edersee\u00a0<\/em>became officially\u00a0a\u00a0<em>Nationalpark<\/em>, and was opened on May 25 of the same year. Much like park\u00a0<em>Hainich\u00a0<\/em>that we discussed last time, this park was primarily founded to protect the old\u00a0<em>Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>found here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The name\u00a0<em>Kellerwald-Edersee\u00a0<\/em>comes from the two parts that the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>encompasses. There is the\u00a0<em>Kellerwald\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;Cellar Forest&#8221;), which includes the ancient\u00a0<em>Buchenw\u00e4lder\u00a0<\/em>the park seeks to protect. And there is the\u00a0<em>Edersee<\/em>, a lake right above the park. It is not included in the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark<\/em>, but is still an important Point of Interest, and so it is included in the name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The\u00a0<em>Nationalpark\u00a0<\/em>is also part of the larger\u00a0<em>Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em> (Nature Park\u00a0<em>Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What is special about the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>Der Buchenwald<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<div style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nationaal_Park_Kellerwald-Edersee#\/media\/File:Kellerwald_001.jpg\" aria-label=\"800px Kellerwald 001\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\"  width=\"534\" height=\"712\" \/ alt=\"800px Kellerwald 001\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/7c\/Kellerwald_001.jpg\/800px-Kellerwald_001.jpg\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Buchenwald<\/em> in <em>Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em> (Image by Willow at Commons.wikimedia.org under license CC BY SA 2.5)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee\u00a0<\/em>serves primarily to protect its\u00a0<em>Buchenwald\u00a0<\/em>(beech forest). Just like the parks <em>Hainich\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Jasmund<\/em>, the\u00a0forest in <em>Nationalpark Kellerwald-Edersee<\/em>\u00a0is under the same UNESCO <em>Weltnaturerbe\u00a0<\/em>(World Heritage \u2013 Natural Site).\u00a0These old beech forests are extremely rare nowadays, and the\u00a0<em>Nationalparks\u00a0<\/em>allow them to develop again in the way they did thousands of years ago. It has an impressive\u00a0<em>Staudamm\u00a0<\/em>(dam) with an interesting history and boat tours on the lake. There is also another\u00a0<em>Baumkronenpfad\u00a0<\/em>(treetop walkway), which we have also seen in other\u00a0<em>Nationalparks. <\/em>You\u00a0cannot really miss out on the\u00a0<em>Edersee\u00a0<\/em>while visiting the\u00a0<em>Nationalpark<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Would you like to visit?
