Recently, as part of my <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/going-back-to-basics-in-german\/\">back to basics post<\/a>, I linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/mein-dein-sein-ihr-etc-german-possessive-pronouns-in-the-nominative-case\/\">a post<\/a> from the archives that deals with German possessive pronouns \u2013 that is, how to say things like \u2018her book\u2019 , \u2018his hat\u2019, \u2018our cat\u2019, and so on. Now I\u2019d like to go over German indefinite pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What are German indefinite pronouns?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>These are pronouns that do not indicate the gender or number of things\/people discussed. To put it simply, they are those vague words like \u2018somebody\u2019, \u2018everybody\u2019, \u2018a few\u2019, and \u2018some\u2019. Why are these important to learn? Because sometimes we aren&#8217;t able to be &#8211; or don&#8217;t want to be &#8211; too specific!<br \/>\n(Note some of the words&#8217; endings here might change in real speech, according to the gender of the subject. But the main thing at this stage is that you get a feel for how these words look and sound. \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>So how do we say these indefinite pronouns in German?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Everybody \u2013 Alle\/Jeder<\/p>\n<p>All of us &#8211; Allesamt<\/p>\n<p>Somebody \u2013 Jemand\/Irgendwer<\/p>\n<p>Nobody \u2013 Niemand\/Keiner<\/p>\n<p>Anybody \u2013 Jedermann\/Irgendjemand<\/p>\n<p>Something \u2013 (Irgend)Etwas<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere \u2013 Irgendwo<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere &#8211; Nirgends\/Nirgendwo<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Both &#8211; Beide<\/p>\n<p>Some\/a few &#8211; Einige<\/p>\n<p>A lot\/many &#8211; Viel(e)<\/p>\n<p>Those two\/three\/four \u2013 Diese zwei\/drei\/vier<\/p>\n<p>**<\/p>\n<p>Any \u2013 Irgendwelche(s)<\/p>\n<p>A bit \u2013 Ein bisschen<\/p>\n<p>A little \u2013 Ein wenig<\/p>\n<p>One\/You (eg. \u2018One can do this\u2019) &#8211; Man<\/p>\n<p>Several &#8211; Mehrere<\/p>\n<p>Such\/of the like &#8211; Solche<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Take a look at some of the above words in action:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Niemand <\/strong>will heute Abend mitgehen &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<strong> Nobody<\/strong> wants to go this evening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Einige<\/strong> von uns gehen ins Kino &#8212;&#8212;- <strong>A few<\/strong> of us are going to the cinema.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beide<\/strong> sehen gut aus &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- <strong>Both <\/strong>look good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mehrere<\/strong> von uns wollen mitgehen &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211; <strong>Several <\/strong>of us want to go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alle <\/strong>hier sind verr\u00fcckt &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211; <strong>Everyone<\/strong> here is crazy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Irgendetwas<\/strong> stimmt nicht &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; <strong>Something <\/strong>is not right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jemand <\/strong>muss mir helfen &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; <strong>Someone <\/strong>needs to help me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solche<\/strong> Sachen sind hier verboten &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- <strong>Such<\/strong> things are forbidden here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Man<\/strong> muss das Fenster aufmachen \u00a0&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- <strong>One\/you<\/strong> must open the window.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sie ist heute <strong>ein bisschen<\/strong> langsam &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; She\u2019s <strong>a bit<\/strong> slow today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ein wenig<\/strong> Butter und dann stimmt\u2019s &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211; <strong>A little<\/strong> butter and then it\u2018s perfect.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ich gehe <strong>nirgendwo<\/strong> hin &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- I\u2019m going <strong>nowhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ich brauche<strong> irgendwelche <\/strong>Gedichte f\u00fcr meine Hausaufgaben &#8212;&#8212;&#8211; I need <strong>any\/some sort of<\/strong> poems for my homework.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Es steckt <strong>irgendwo<\/strong> im Schrank &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; It\u2019s <strong>somewhere <\/strong>in the wardrobe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I hope this post has been helpful.
