Yes, Germans cherish tidiness and order, which can go into the absurd. Sometimes, Germans just take their <em>Ordnungssinn\u00a0<\/em>(sense of order) too far!\u00a0Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Maschendrahtzaun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maschendrahtzaun - Best of TV total\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yxwXozLR2IA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back in the 1990s, one particular woman became a hit for the way she pronounced\u00a0<em>Maschendrahtzaun\u00a0<\/em>(wire mesh fence). See the video above. It was picked up by the host of the comedy show\u00a0<em>TV Total<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Stefan Ra<\/em><em>ab<\/em>, and he made a song out of it. It is a German attempt to make a country song, so please take it with a grain of salt \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>So, you may ask, besides the bad German humor, what about this is so\u00a0<em>penibel\u00a0<\/em>(fastidious),\u00a0<em>pr\u00e4zise\u00a0<\/em>(precise), or simply: German?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Grund\u00a0<\/em>(reason) for the\u00a0<em>Klage\u00a0<\/em>(lawsuit) that she filed. As you can hear in the first part of the video above, she is very <em>ver\u00e4rgert<\/em>\u00a0(upset)\u00a0that her\u00a0<em>Nachbar\u00a0<\/em>(neighbor) has a small <em>Haufen\u00a0<\/em>(pile) of <em>Erde\u00a0<\/em>(soil) and next to it\u00a0a\u00a0<em>Pflanze\u00a0<\/em>(plant), which are close to her <em>Zaun\u00a0<\/em>(fence). In her words, he has\u00a0a\u00a0<em>Knallerbsenstrauch <\/em>(snowberry bush) planted next to the\u00a0<em>Erdaufsch\u00fcttung<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>aufgesch\u00fcttetes Erdreich\u00a0<\/em>(earth hill). And the humidity of the soil destroys their <em>Maschendrahtzaun<\/em>, she claims. Yes&#8230; Worth a trial!<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, this ridiculous sense of <em>Ordnung\u00a0<\/em>added a lot to the fun!<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Loriot &#8211;\u00a0<em>Das Bild h\u00e4ngt schief<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dq3E0iXRY7o<\/p>\n<p>Loriot was an important German comedian, that made a lot of fun of the German way of life in a great way. The humor focuses on the eloquent and precise way of expressing oneself in German, and in this case, of getting annoyed with something as small as a picture that doesn&#8217;t hang exactly straight. This leads to much worse <em>Unordnung\u00a0<\/em>(disorder), and as much as the man tries, he cannot get\u00a0<em>Ordnung\u00a0<\/em>back! Ashamed, but trying to show his good, rightful, German intentions, he tells the lady:\u00a0<em>Das Bild h\u00e4ngt schief<\/em> (The picture is crooked).\u00a0Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Schauspielerbetreuungsflugbuchungsstatisterieleitungsgastspielorganisationsspezialist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How long can a German word get?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A1pwUsP9QtY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Germans like it <em>spezifisch\u00a0<\/em>(specific). They do not shy away from using extremely long words to make clear what exactly they mean!\u00a0The one we have here is&#8230; Well, 85 letters long.\u00a0<em>Schauspielerbetreuungsflugbuchungsstatisterieleitungsgastspielorganisationsspezialist\u00a0<\/em>means Specialist for the Organization of Guest Appearances, for the Management of the Extras and for the Support of Flight Booking of an Actor. Obviously, this is quite a fabricated word, and nobody would ever use a word like this. But, it has its <em>Ordnung<\/em>. Yet, there are many long words in German, and often they are simply abbreviated. Makes things a lot easier. So much so, that the show\u00a0<em>Extra 3<\/em> has a segment called\u00a0<em>Realer Irrsinn\u00a0<\/em>(real insanity). One of these segments is about a\u00a0<em>Bahnhof\u00a0<\/em>(train station) that I used many times, and this is one I want to highlight here.<\/p>\n<p>The platform is owned by the\u00a0<em>Deutsche Bahn<\/em>, whereas the station building is owned by the\u00a0<em>Eisenbahngesellschaft Bad Bentheim<\/em>. The platform had to be heightened to enable the trains to be\u00a0<em>barrierefrei<\/em>\u00a0(accessible, for people with disabilities). Unfortunately, the\u00a0coordination did not go so well &#8211; and the station building was not heightened so far. Consequence: the platform cannot be accessed through the building &#8211; unless you use the window!<\/p>\n<p>I was there myself lately, and the window is now sealed, so you cannot go through the building anymore to get onto the platform.
