From texting shortcuts to internet abbreviations, from names to government departments. There are differences in how we abbreviate, though. We Germans have a pretty interesting take on it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Germans like abbreviating stuff. Understandable, as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/4-times-germans-took-their-sense-of-order-too-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German words can become really long sometimes.<\/a> Especially for words that are used a lot in everyday speech &#8211; an abbreviation makes speaking very\u00a0<em>\u00f6konomisch<\/em> (efficient).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Germany, abbreviations are used differently than in English. In English, words or a group of words are abbreviated with their first letter most of the time. For example:\u00a0<em>Department of Defense\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em>DoD<\/em>,\u00a0<em>imo\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em>in my opinion.\u00a0<\/em>There are also abbreviations\u00a0like <em>UFO<\/em> or\u00a0<em>NASA<\/em>, where the abbreviation is pronounced as a word &#8211; that is a\u00a0<em>Kurzwort\u00a0<\/em>(literally &#8220;short word&#8221; &#8211; acronyms).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Kurzw\u00f6rter <\/em>(acronyms)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Kurzw\u00f6rter\u00a0<\/em>are words that are written in an abbreviated form and are also pronounced as such.\u00a0<em>UFO\u00a0<\/em>will never be spoken as\u00a0<em>Unidentified Flying Object<\/em>, whereas\u00a0<em>DoD\u00a0<\/em>will most likely be spoken as\u00a0<em>Department of Defense<\/em>. In Germany, we have those too:\u00a0<em>Personenkraftwagen\u00a0<\/em>becomes\u00a0<em>PKW, <\/em>and <em>Christliche Demokratische Union Deutschlands\u00a0<\/em>becomes\u00a0<em>CDU<\/em>,\u00a0for example. There are many varieties of\u00a0<em>Kurzw\u00f6rter<\/em>, but I will focus on a particular kind of abbreviation that is barely used in English, but quite widespread in German:\u00a0<em>Sil<\/em><em>benkurzw\u00f6rter<\/em>\u00a0(syllabic abbreviations).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Silbenkurzw\u00f6rter <\/em>(syllabic abbreviations)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Silbenkurzw\u00f6rter\u00a0<\/em>are\u00a0<em>K\u00fcrzw\u00f6rter\u00a0<\/em>that abbreviate by taking the initial syllables of different words or word group and creating a new word that way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example:\u00a0<em>Interpol\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<strong><em>Inter<\/em><\/strong><em>national\u00a0<strong>Pol<\/strong>ice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In German, there are many of these! Here a little list:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><em>Azubi\u00a0<\/em><em>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong>us<strong>zu<\/strong><strong>bi<\/strong><\/em><em>ldende(r)\u00a0<\/em>(apprentice)<\/li>\n<li><em>Kripo\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em><strong>Kri<\/strong>minal<strong>po<\/strong>lizei\u00a0<\/em>(The &#8220;criminal police&#8221;, the criminal investigation agency of the German police)<\/li>\n<li><em>Kita\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em><strong>Ki<\/strong>nder<strong>ta<\/strong>gesst\u00e4tte\u00a0<\/em>(Day Care in Germany)<\/li>\n<li><em>Schiri <\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em><strong>Schi<\/strong>eds<strong>ri<\/strong>chter<\/em>\u00a0(referee)<\/li>\n<li><em>Schuko &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Schu<\/strong>tz<strong>ko<\/strong>ntakt\u00a0<\/em>(registered trademark for a system of electric plugs used in Europe, of which the\u00a0<em>Kurzwort\u00a0<\/em>is used very widely in Germany)<\/li>\n<li><em>Vokuhila\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<strong><em>Vo<\/em><\/strong><em>rne\u00a0<strong>ku<\/strong>rz,\u00a0<strong>hi<\/strong>nten\u00a0<strong>la<\/strong>ng\u00a0<\/em>(the German mullet, that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/the-german-mullet-other-hairstyles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Constanze has written about before<\/a>. Worth checking out!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And many names for brands etc. are in fact\u00a0<em>Silbenkurzw\u00f6rter<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><em>Adidas\u00a0<\/em><em>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Adi\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Da<\/em><\/strong><em>ssler\u00a0<\/em>(Name of the founder of the shoe company. His first name is actually\u00a0<em>Adolf<\/em>, but\u00a0<em>Adi\u00a0<\/em>was his nickname)<\/li>\n<li><em>Aldi\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em><strong>Al<\/strong>brecht\u00a0<strong>Di<\/strong>skont\u00a0<\/em>(Family name of the founders of the discounter supermarket chain together with the old German word for\u00a0discounter)<\/li>\n<li><em>KiKa\u00a0<\/em><em>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Ki<\/strong>nder<strong>Ka<\/strong>nal\u00a0<\/em>(Children&#8217;s Channel &#8211; public German TV channel for children)<\/li>\n<li><em>Haribo\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;<em>\u00a0<strong>Ha<\/strong>ns\u00a0<strong>Ri<\/strong>egel\u00a0<strong>B<\/strong>onn\u00a0<\/em>(Hans Riegel was the founder of the candy company, and he founded the company in the city of\u00a0<em>Bonn<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why are these kinds of abbreviations so popular in Germany? I think it has all to do with pronunciation. Vowels just make it all a lot easier to pronounce, and makes the abbreviation much more a word.
