You may remember last year I wrote about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-words-of-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Wort des Jahres<\/strong> <em>(Word of the Year)<\/em> and the <strong>Unwort des Jahres<\/strong> <em>(Un-word of the Year &#8211; an offensive\/negative word of the year)<\/em> for 2014<\/a>. These are published towards the end of each year by the <strong>Gesellschaft f\u00fcr deutsche Sprache <\/strong>(GfdS) &#8211; the Association for German Language. You can enter your favourite German \u2018youth word\u2019 on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jugendwort.de\">website<\/a>, and then a jury selects the winner from the shortlisted words. The Jugendwort des Jahres is then revealed in November each year! You can even buy a dictionary each year full of <strong>Jugendw\u00f6rter<\/strong> <em>(teen slang)<\/em>! Christmas present, perhaps?! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the Wort des Jahres and the Unwort des Jahres, which more often than not hint at the country\u2019s political goings-on, the <strong>Jugendwort des Jahres<\/strong> gives a snapshot into the lives of German teens and the slang they use.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the winner of the Jugendwort des Jahres 2016:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>Fly sein \u2013 \u2018to be fly\u2019.<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>This is an English loanword which has been around since the 1990s. It roughly means \u2018to be cool\u2019. It\u2019s only just made its way into Germany and now German teens have adopted it as their<em> Jugendwort<\/em> of 2016!<\/h3>\n<p>Other shortlisted words include <strong>bae<\/strong> (Also adopted from English, \u2018bae\u2019 stands for \u2018before anyone else\u2019 and refers to a close friend\/partner\/someone very important to you), <strong>Isso<\/strong> (A short way of saying \u2018Das ist so\u2019, meaning \u2018That\u2019s how it is\u2019), and <strong>Hopfensmoothie<\/strong> (Literally \u2018hops smoothie\u2019. But in case you\u2019re wondering what the 2015 words were:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Wort des Jahres 2015:<\/u> Fl\u00fcchtlinge \u2013 Refugees.<\/strong> As the refugee situation was at the centre of German politics in 2015, I\u2019d say there are no surprises here.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Unwort des Jahres 2015:<\/u> Gutmensch \u2013 \u2018Do-gooder\u2019.<\/strong> This term was used sarcastically by followers of far-right movements such as PEGIDA to describe people who \u2018do good\u2019 by supporting refugees and fighting for a multicultural, multi-ethnic Germany.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think of these words?
