What do you do if you find yourself in an emergency situation in a German-speaking country? Which number do you call, and what is it you ask for? This post will tell you exactly that!<\/p>\n

The numbers to call:<\/h3>\n

In Germany:
\n<\/strong>110 \u2013 police
\n112 \u2013 ambulance\/fire brigade<\/p>\n

In Austria:
\nCall 112 for general emergency. Or:<\/strong>
\n133 \u2013 police
\n122 \u2013 fire brigade
\n144 \u2013 ambulance<\/p>\n

IF YOU\u2019RE IN PUBLIC it would be useful to ask a local for help, as they will be able to communicate with the emergency services quickly. Things to say when asking for help:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Help! \u2013 Hilfe! (hill-feh<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fire! \u2013 Feuer! (foy-ah<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Thief! \u2013 Dieb! (deeb<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Ruf den Notruf an! \u2013 Call the emergency services!
\nRuf die Polizei an! \u2013 Call the police!<\/p>\n

Ist jemand Ersthelfer? \u2013 Is someone here a first aider?<\/p>\n

K\u00f6nnen Sie mir helfen? \u2013 Could you help me?<\/p>\n

IF YOU\u2019RE ALONE: What do you say?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If your German is not advanced, when calling an emergency service, stating which service you need (eg. \u2018Polizei\u2019 <\/strong>– police), what has happened (eg. \u2018Einbruch\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 burglary), and the relevant address <\/strong>will suffice. So even if you say:<\/p>\n

\u201cPolizei \u2026 Einbruch \u2026 123 Deutsch Strasse!\u201c<\/strong>
\n \u201cPolice\u2026 burglary\u2026 123 German Street!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2026 they will get the message!<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s a list of other things you could <\/em>say. Please note they are very generalised as it would be impossible to cover all manner of situations and illnesses here! The main idea is to get across what the nature of the emergency is.
