Just because you see a noun doesn&#8217;t mean you should always\u00a0attach an article in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>In German, it&#8217;s common to see articles used after a\u00a0preposition (<strong>die Pr\u00e4position<\/strong>)\u00a0: <strong>in der Nacht<\/strong> (at night)<\/p>\n<p>With parts of the body : <strong>die Augen<\/strong> (eye)<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0 an institution (<strong>die Anstalt<\/strong>) or organization (<strong>die Organisation<\/strong>) : <strong>die Schule<\/strong> (school)<\/p>\n<p>With clothing (<strong>die Bekleidung<\/strong>) : <strong>das Hemd<\/strong> (shirt)<\/p>\n<p>Measurements : <strong>das Kilo<\/strong> (kilo)<\/p>\n<p>Name of a\u00a0country (<strong>die Heimat<\/strong>) : <strong>die USA <\/strong>(USA)<\/p>\n<p>Month (<strong>der Monat<\/strong>) : <strong>der Juni<\/strong> (June)<\/p>\n<p>Seasons : <strong>der Sommer<\/strong> (summer)<\/p>\n<p>Famous people or historical figures : <strong>die dietrich<\/strong> ([Marlene] Dietrich)<\/p>\n<p>Streets : <strong>die Beethovenallee<\/strong> (Beethovan Street)<\/p>\n<p>General\/vague\/abstract nouns : <strong>das Leben<\/strong> (life)<\/p>\n<p>Fixed expressions : <strong>in der Tat<\/strong> (in fact)<\/p>\n<p>*Articles in German are not used with instruments : <strong>Er spielt Piano<\/strong> (he plays piano)<\/p>\n<p>Also not used with professions and nationalities after the verbs <strong>sein<\/strong>, <strong>werden<\/strong> and <strong>bleiben<\/strong> :\u00a0<strong>Er ist Doktor<\/strong> (he&#8217;s a doctor)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>German and English use the articles in similar ways, however there are some exceptions.
