I had intended this post to be a straight-forward post on handy German vocabulary related to pregnancies. What I did not anticipate was how many pregnancy-related words are incredibly cute, or incredibly interesting in German. We’ll start with some basic vocabulary before moving onto the fun stuff!<\/p>\n

Basic German pregnancy vocabulary:<\/h2>\n

die Schwangerschaft<\/strong> \u2013 Pregnancy. Ich bin schwanger<\/strong> \u2013 I am pregnant.<\/em><\/p>\n

die Hebamme<\/strong> \u2013 Midwife<\/p>\n

die Geburt<\/strong> \u2013 Birth<\/p>\n

der Geburtstermin<\/strong> \u2013 Due date<\/p>\n

die Kinderklinik<\/strong> \u2013 Children’s clinic<\/p>\n

der Kinderarzt<\/strong> \u2013 Paediatrician. Literally, ‘child doctor’.<\/p>\n

First off, the English expression To have a bun in the oven <\/strong>is Einen Braten in der R\u00f6hre haben<\/strong><\/em> in German: To have a roast in the oven.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re new parents, you\u2019re called die frischgebackene Eltern<\/strong> in German:\u00a0 Freshly-baked parents.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The German word for the contraceptive pill is die Antibabypille: The anti-baby pill.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

There you have my top 10 amazing German pregnancy words! One thing that struck me is how many have the word Mutter<\/strong> (mother) in them, and how much softer\/<\/strong>less clinical they sound than their English counterparts.
