But what is Duden? And what are the words? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duden.de\/\"><strong>Duden<\/strong><\/a> is\u00a0a dictionary\u00a0of the German language. It was first published by Konrad Duden (hence the name) in 1880, and has just released its 27<sup>th<\/sup> edition. Photo by bidok Leicht Lesen on flickr.com under a CC license (CC BY-SA 2.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Duden has just added 5,000 new German words to its dictionary. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Words are added based on how frequently they are used in the German language, so\u00a0 each time it gets updated it\u00a0gives a great insight into contemporary German <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">culture and language.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Let\u2019s take a look at some of these <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">new words!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">A lot of the new German words are <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">actually <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">English (or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/denglisch-on-social-media-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denglish<\/a>). <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">A few new verbs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">f<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>acebooken<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">to facebook<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>taggen<\/strong> \u2013 <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">to tag<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>liken<\/strong> \u2013 <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">to like (not to be confused with the English word meaning \u2018to compare to\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>tindern<\/strong> \u2013 t<span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">aken from the website name Tinder, the verb \u2018tindern\u2019 is now a general term meaning <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u2018to online date\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Here are a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> few new nouns that have made it into Duden. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">They don\u2019t need a translation because they are all \u2026 English.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Emoji<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Darknet<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Tablet<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Selfie<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Hashtag <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">This edition has also added the <strong>Danish<\/strong> word for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/untranslatable-german-words-gemutlichkeit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gem<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">tlichkeit \u2013 Hygge. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">So are<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> any of these new German words actually <em>German<\/em>? <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Yes \u2013 here are some of them<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Das Schm<span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00e4<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>hgedicht<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">blasphemous or offensive poem<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Der <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>Cyberkrieg<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">cyber (online) war<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">ie<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Wutb<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">rger<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">in<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">An angry female citizen. Its male counterpart, der <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Wutb<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">rger, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">was already added<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>postfaktisch<\/strong> &#8211; \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">post-truth\u2019, referring to political campaigns that appealed to people\u2019s emotions rather than to the facts<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Die Hasskriminalit<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00e4<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>t<\/strong> \u2013 Hate crime<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>das Kopfkino<\/strong> &#8211; &#8216;Head cinema&#8217; (daydream)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>Der Kopftuchstreit<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Headscarf fight\u2019, relating to the debate over whether women should be allowed to wear headscarves in certain professions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>Das Nachtshopping<\/strong> \u2013 This half-German, half-English word means \u2018late-night shopping\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>ick<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">The Berlin dialect has made its way into Duden. \u2018Ick\u2019 is how they say \u2018ich\u2019 in Berlin (no sign of the Bavarian \u2018i\u2019 or Hessian \u2018isch\u2019 yet, though!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">r<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>umeiern<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Verb meaning to<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> amble aimlessly around something and therefore not really achieve anything (literally \u2018to egg about\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Certain spellings have been changed, too. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">The following are three English words that have previously been given German-style spellings to reflect how they are pronounced in German.
