Guten Tag \ud83d\ude42 We\u2019ve had a great selection of food-related posts on the blog already, which make great resources for all of you German learners who are also foodies! What we\u2019re honing in on today are the small (but important!) foods \u2013 the herbs, spices, and specific ingredients used in baking. I hope you\u2019ll find this useful the next time you\u2019re in a German supermarket, reading a German recipe, or if you want to learn some more food-related vocabulary!<\/p>\n

The basics<\/h3>\n

Herb<\/strong> \u2013 das Kraut (plural: die Kr\u00e4uter)
\nSpice<\/strong> \u2013 das Gew\u00fcrz (plural: die Gew\u00fcrze)
\nIngredient<\/strong> \u2013 die Zutat (plural: die Zutaten)
\nTo season<\/strong> – w\u00fcrzen
\nTo bake<\/strong> – backen
\nTo cook<\/strong> \u2013 kochen (Also means \u2018to boil\u2019. Although this is fine to use, if you want a more general way of saying you\u2019re making food, you can use the verb zubereiten<\/strong> – to prepare).<\/p>\n

Paprika<\/strong> \u2013 der Paprika (Be aware: In German \u2018Paprika\u2019 is also the name for the red\/green \/yellow pepper<\/b>.\u00a0You may also see it\u00a0as die Paprikaschote<\/strong>. Many languages use the same word for the pepper and the paprika spice, although English is not one of them. So if your German pal writes \u2018Paprika\u2019 on their shopping list, make sure you clarify if you\u2019re buying the spice or the fruit!).<\/p>\n
