If you\u2019re a fan of Herbst (Autumn) and autumnal foods, then I hope you\u2019ll like this post about traditional German apple sauce \u2013 otherwise known as <strong>Apfelkompott or Apfelmus<\/strong>. Foto: 36039674@N07 on flickr.com under a CC license (CC by 2.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Apfelkompott is a simple sauce made using apples, water, cinnamon and sugar (and sometimes other spices, lemon, etc). It is sold in big jars or cartons in all German supermarkets. Although apple sauce is hardly restricted to German cuisine, Apfelkompott has always been synonymous with Germany for me, and each time I visited as a child I demanded to eat it (and I still do this now, actually)!<\/p>\n<h3>There are several different ways of eating Apfelkompott:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As a traditional German accompaniment to roast meats<\/li>\n<li>As a dessert for children and babies (as it is very smooth and easy to digest)<\/li>\n<li>It can be eaten warm or cold, with sweet or savoury foods, as a snack, or as part of a larger meal &#8211; the possibilities are endless!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>German dishes using Apfelkompott include:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Apfelkompott und Kartoffelpuffer<\/strong><br \/>\nKartoffelpuffer are simple potato cakes made from Kartoffel (potato), Mehl (flour) &amp; Eier (eggs). Its name translates to Heaven and Earth, and it is called this because the apples represent heaven (as they fall from above) and the potatoes represent earth (as they come from the ground). In fact, the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century German word for potato is der Erdapfel \u2013 the \u2018earth apple\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>Make your own Apfelkompott<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Here is my very easy recipe for making Apfelkompott.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Zutaten &#8211; ingredients:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Apples &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00c4<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">pfel<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Cinnamon &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Zimt<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Water &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Wasser<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Sugar &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Zucker<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">You\u2019ll also need a large<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">, glass bowl<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">and a handheld blender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">die Methode \u2013 method<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Peel the apples and slice them thinly. Place the slices in your glass bowl. Then add enough cold water to fill half the bowl. Add your sugar and cinnamon (depending on how much you want). Then microwave in 5 minute intervals, checking after each 5 minutes to see how soft the apples are. Mash them with a fork to test this. When t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">hey are soft enough<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">, leave the Apfelkompott to cool a little before using a handheld blender to create a smooth texture.
