Guten Tag! Der Schlaf (sleep) is not only one of life\u2019s greatest joys, but it is extremely important, too. So let\u2019s have a look at all things ‘sleep’ in German!\u00a0Many thanks to the French blog<\/a> for providing the inspiration for this post.<\/p>\n

Firstly, the word for sleep<\/strong> (noun) in German is der Schlaf.<\/strong> The verb to sleep<\/strong> is schlafen<\/strong>. Here it is in the present tense:<\/p>\n

Ich schlafe – I sleep\/I am sleeping
\nDu schl\u00e4<\/span>fst – You sleep\/are sleeping
\nEr\/sie\/es schl\u00e4ft – He\/she\/it sleeps\/is sleeping
\nWir schlafen – We sleep\/we are sleeping
\nIhr schlaft – You(plural) sleep\/you are sleeping
\nSie\/sie schlafen – You(formal) sleep\/are sleeping \/ They sleep\/are sleeping<\/span><\/p>\n

If someone is falling<\/em> asleep<\/strong>, however, then the verb is einschlafen<\/strong>. Here is the verb einschlafen<\/strong> in the present tense \u2013 please note it is a separable verb. Read more about separable verbs and how they work.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Ich schlafe ein – I am falling asleep
\nDu schl<\/span>\u00e4<\/span>fst ein – You are falling asleep
\nEr\/sie\/es schl\u00e4<\/span>f<\/span>t ein – He\/she\/it is falling asleep
\nWir schlafen ein – We are falling asleep
\nIhr schlaft ein – You(plural) are falling asleep
\nSie\/sie schlafen ein – You(formal)\/they are falling asleep<\/span><\/p>\n

If you want to differentiate between going to sleep<\/strong> and going to bed<\/strong>, here is how you say both of these:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Ich gehe ins Bett<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m going to bed
\nIch gehe schlafen<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m going to sleep<\/span><\/p>\n

You could also say Ich lege mich (ein bisschen) hin<\/strong>, which means I\u2019m going to lie down (for a while).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s nap time<\/strong>! A nap in German is called das Nickerchen<\/strong>. This word comes from the German verb nicken \u2013 to nod<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have a bad night\u2019s sleep, or are generally bad at early mornings, the Germans might say you\u2019re a Morgenmuffel.<\/strong> <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

A dream<\/strong> is called der Traum<\/strong> in German, while a nightmare<\/strong> is called der Alptraum<\/strong> (sometimes spelled Albtraum). You can read more about the word Alptraum in this post<\/a> <\/span>(it\u2019s quite an interesting word).<\/span><\/p>\n

Coma<\/strong> \u2013 das Koma<\/span><\/p>\n

Lullaby<\/strong> \u2013 das Schlaflied (\u2018sleep song\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n

To snore<\/strong> – schnarchen<\/span><\/p>\n

Insomnia<\/strong> \u2013 die Schlaflosigkeit (\u2018sleeplessness\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n

Pyjamas<\/strong> \u2013 der Schlafanzug<\/span><\/p>\n

Bed<\/strong> \u2013 das Bett<\/span><\/p>\n

Duvet<\/strong> \u2013 die Bettdecke<\/span><\/p>\n

Pillow<\/strong> \u2013 das Kopfkissen<\/span><\/p>\n

Alarm clock<\/strong> \u2013 der Wecker (\u2018the waker\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n
