It was used as a means of humiliating punishment from the 14th up until the 18th century for\u00a0<em>Gartendiebe\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;garden thief&#8221; &#8211; somebody that stole something from a garden\/crops from a field)\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Felddiebe<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;field thief&#8221; &#8211; somebody that\u00a0stole something from a field\/hunted illegally). They were pushed onto the steps, and they had to keep walking, until it would tip towards the water. The\u00a0<em>Diebe\u00a0<\/em>would fall into the <em>Gro\u00dfer Teich\u00a0<\/em>(big pond)\u00a0and had to get back to the\u00a0<em>Ufer\u00a0<\/em>(riverbank) by themselves. Not everyone could swim in those times, so it would make quite an embarrassing sight in those times!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The use of the\u00a0<em>Wippe\u00a0<\/em>today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wippen der Soester Sch\u00fctzen 2017\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/isgwhfUWQ-4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even today, the\u00a0<em>Soester Wippe\u00a0<\/em>still exists. It is used Tuesday after the first Saturday after\u00a0<em>Johanni<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Johannistag\u00a0<\/em>(Nativity of Saint John the Baptist) on June 24. On that Saturday, the\u00a0<em>B\u00fcrgersch\u00fctzenfest\u00a0<\/em>(Civilian Marksmen&#8217;s Festival) is held in Soest. The Tuesday after that, the\u00a0<em>Wippe\u00a0<\/em>is used for the so-called\u00a0<em>Wippen in den Gro\u00dfen Teich\u00a0<\/em>(Rocking into the Big Pond).<\/p>\n<p>It is now a tradition of poking fun with each other, where well-known citizens of the city are nominated, and participate in the fun. While there is no more criminal activity required for the accused, there is a\u00a0<em>Urteil\u00a0<\/em>(judgment) read out. It often rhymes and tells of their alleged crime. For example, in the video above, the\u00a0<em>Kammerpresident\u00a0<\/em>(Chamber president) was one of the\u00a0<em>drei Malefikanten\u00a0<\/em>(three malicious ones) nominated by the\u00a0<em>B\u00fcrgersch\u00fctzen,\u00a0<\/em>because he had not done enough to get tax cuts passed.<\/p>\n<p>Also, as you can see in the video, the\u00a0<em>Wippe\u00a0<\/em>is held steady now, so that the accused can climb up the stairs and jump off, and don&#8217;t injure themselves as may happen if it rocks&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You can find many videos and reports of previous years and the events around it on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soester-anzeiger.de\/thema\/wippen-in-den-grossen-teich-ere474617\/\">web page of the\u00a0<em>Soester Anzeiger<\/em><\/a>, a local news agency.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>If you were &#8220;accused&#8221;, would you jump off the\u00a0<em>Wippe<\/em>?
