Guten Tag, und gutes neues Jahr<\/strong> (hello, and happy new year!)<\/em>! Are you the kind of person who likes looking back on the year just gone, and looking forward to the year ahead? I know I definitely am! On Silvester (New Year\u2019s Eve) I sat and wrote in my Tagebuch (diary) about what I\u2019ve felt and done in 2017, and what my goals and wishes for 2018 are. If this is something you\u2019d like to have a go at doing in German, read on!<\/p>\n

Looking back<\/h2>\n

The Germans have a word for the act of looking back over the year just gone: der Jahres\u00fc<\/span>berblick (Jahr = year, <\/span>\u00dcberblick = review). Here are a few phrases you might use when looking back over your year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017 habe ich ganz viel erreicht<\/strong>. – I achieved a lot in 2017.
\n<\/span><\/span>2017 war ein schwieriges Jahr f\u00fcr mich.<\/strong> – 2017 was a hard year for me.
\n<\/span><\/span>In 2017 habe ich \u2026 ausprobiert.<\/strong> – I tried \u2026 in 2017.
\nIn 2017 bin ich viel gereist.<\/strong> – I travelled a lot in 2017.
\nIn 2017 hat sich viel ge\u00e4ndert.<\/strong> – A lot changed in 2017.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You may also look back and wish<\/strong> you had done more of something, in which case you <\/span><\/span>use Ich w\u00fcnsch<\/em><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/em>e, ich h\u00e4tte<\/em> \u2013 I wish I had:
\nIch w\u00fcnsch<\/strong><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/strong>e, ich h\u00e4tte mehr Reisen unternommen<\/strong> – I wish I had travelled more\/gone on more trips.
\nIch w\u00fcnsch<\/strong><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/strong>e, ich h\u00e4tte weniger gearbeitet.<\/strong> – I wish I had worked less.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead involves speaking about our hopes (die Hoffnungen), dreams (die Tr\u00e4ume) and goals (die Ziele). The <\/span><\/span>German word for a New Year\u2018s Resolution is der Neujahrsvorsatz (plural: die Neujahrsvors\u00e4tze). Here are some examples of ways to express your W\u00fcnsche (wishes) for the year ahead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018 m\u00f6chte ich \u2026<\/strong> – In 2018 I would like to …
\n<\/span><\/span>Ich hoffe <\/span><\/span>auf<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ein erfolgreiches neues Jahr.<\/strong> – I\u2018m hoping for a successful new year.
