Many people dream of it:\u00a0Eine Traumhochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(a dream wedding). It is a huge\u00a0Ereignis\u00a0<\/em>(event) in anyone’s life, and it is celebrated accordingly! To celebrate the\u00a0Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>year after year, the\u00a0Hochzeitstag\u00a0<\/em>(wedding anniversary) is given meaning every year! This is known in other parts of the world as well as in Germany. Here are 7 of the most common\u00a0Hochzeitstage\u00a0<\/em>and what they stand for!<\/p>\n

1. After 5 years:\u00a0With or Without children?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With Children:\u00a0H\u00f6lzerne Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Flei\u00dfhochzeit)\u00a0<\/em>(Wooden Wedding (diligence wedding))<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The first thing to note: The anniversaries are also called\u00a0Hochzeit<\/em>, just like a normal wedding. There is a difference in the\u00a0Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>whether there are\u00a0Kinder\u00a0<\/em>(children) or not! The\u00a0Holz\u00a0<\/em>(wood) is symbol for how the\u00a0Partnerschaft\u00a0<\/em>(relationship) is already quite stable, but still needs to grow and develop further. It seems that until then, the\u00a0Partnerschaft\u00a0<\/em>is working, though. Knock on – you guessed it –\u00a0Holz<\/em>! This is similar to the traditional wooden anniversary in the USA.<\/p>\n

If there are multiple\u00a0Kinder<\/em>, it is called a\u00a0Flei\u00dfhochzeit<\/em> – the\u00a0Eltern\u00a0<\/em>(parents) have been busy!<\/p>\n

It is customary to give wooden items on this anniversary.<\/p>\n

Without Children: Ochsenhochzeit<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(Gummihochzeit<\/em>)\u00a0Ox Wedding (rubber wedding))<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Traditionally, at such a\u00a0Hochzeit<\/em>, a\u00a0Kranz\u00a0<\/em>(wreath) is hung at the\u00a0Haust\u00fcr<\/em>, with\u00a0Kondome\u00a0<\/em>(condoms) and\u00a0Luftballons\u00a0<\/em>(balloons) that have holes in them.<\/p>\n

2. After 12.5 years:\u00a0Petersilienhochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Parsley Wedding)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After 12.5 years, things can get a little\u00a0langweilig\u00a0<\/em>(boring) and\u00a0eint\u00f6nig\u00a0<\/em>(monotonous). To keep the\u00a0Partnerschaft\u00a0<\/em>frisch\u00a0<\/em>(fresh),\u00a0gr\u00fcn<\/em> (green) and\u00a0w\u00fcrzig\u00a0<\/em>(spicy), guests bring\u00a0Gew\u00fcrze\u00a0<\/em>(spices) and\u00a0Gem\u00fcse\u00a0<\/em>(vegetables) to the wedding!<\/p>\n

3. After 25 years: Silberhochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Silver Wedding)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As in the United States, the 25th\u00a0Hochzeitstag\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0Silber\u00a0<\/em>(silver). After 25 years, a lot of\u00a0H\u00f6hen und Tiefen\u00a0<\/em>(ups and downs) have been gone through, and this day should be honored with a big day. The\u00a0Partnerschaft\u00a0<\/em>is now\u00a0versilbert\u00a0<\/em>(silvered). Silver items are given on this day, such as\u00a0Schmuck\u00a0<\/em>(jewelry) or Besteck\u00a0<\/em>(silverware).<\/p>\n

4. After 50 years: Goldene Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Golden Wedding)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As in the United States, 50 years after the\u00a0Ja\u00a0<\/em>(yes) was given, the\u00a0Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>is celebrated in\u00a0Gold\u00a0<\/em>(gold). Gold is\u00a0best\u00e4ndig\u00a0<\/em>(resilient) and can go through a lot of stress – just like the\u00a0Partnerschaft<\/em>. On this day, new\u00a0Ringe\u00a0<\/em>(rings) are given to the\u00a0Partner\u00a0<\/em>(partner) and the\u00a0Liebesversprechen\u00a0<\/em>(promise of love) is renewed. Items that have some gold in it, such as\u00a0Schmuck\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Porzellan\u00a0<\/em>(porcelain) are given traditionally.<\/p>\n

5. After 60 years:\u00a0Diamanthochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Diamond Wedding)<\/h2>\n

Again, as in other countries, 60 years demonstrate an\u00a0Unverg\u00e4nglichkeit\u00a0<\/em>(immortality) of the love, just like the\u00a0Unverg\u00e4nglichkeit\u00a0<\/em>of a diamond. Because it is so\u00a0selten\u00a0<\/em>(seldom), it is the more\u00a0wertvoll\u00a0<\/em>(valuable).<\/p>\n

6. After 65 years: Eiserne Hochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Iron Wedding)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You would expect that after\u00a0Silber<\/em>,\u00a0Gold<\/em>, and\u00a0Diamant<\/em>, something even more valuable should come along. It does, below. But before that, there is the\u00a0Eiserne Hochzeit. Eisen\u00a0<\/em>(iron), because of the\u00a0eiserne Willen\u00a0<\/em>(iron will), a phrase in German that stands for a very strong, disciplined will. And that is what a wedding that stands for 65 years is – an iron will to keep the\u00a0Partnerschaft <\/em>alive\u00a0in any and all\u00a0H\u00f6hen und Tiefen.<\/em><\/p>\n

7. After 75 years:\u00a0Kronjuwelenhochzeit\u00a0<\/em>(Crown Jewel Wedding)<\/strong><\/h2>\n
