But who is Frau Holle, and what do her bedsheets have to do with snow?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><em><strong>Frau Holle<\/strong> <\/em>is the title of a children\u2019s fairytale written by the famous <strong>Br<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong>der Grimm<\/strong> (Grimm Brothers). Published in 1812 in the first volume of <strong><em>Kinder- und Hausm<\/em><\/strong><\/span><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00e4<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><strong><em>rchen<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Children\u2019s and Household Tales<\/em>), <em>Frau Holle<\/em> is the story of a girl who lives with her evil stepmother. The stepmother forces her to sit outside by the well each day and spin. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">One day, she pricks her finger on the spindle and it falls into the well. She leaps into the well after it, fearing she will be punished, and finds herself in a meadow. There she meets an old lady &#8211; Frau Holle &#8211; who tells her she can stay with her as long as she helps with the housework \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">and one thing, in particular:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018<span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Du mu<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00df<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">t nur Acht geben, da<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00df<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> du mein Bett gut machst und es flei<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00df<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">ig aufsch<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">ttelst, da<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00df<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"> die Federn fliegen, dann schneit es in der Welt.\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/gutenberg.spiegel.de\/buch\/-7018\/27\">source<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2018<span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">But you must make sure you make my bed properly and shake it out thoroughly, so that the feathers fly \u2013 then it will snow the world over.\u2019<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">he girl agreed, and so the story goes on in typical fairytale fashion (the girl is rewarded for her hard work, while the stepmother\u2019s biological daughter tries the same thing, but is punished for her laziness).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">his story actually began not as a figment of the Grimm brothers\u2019 imagination, but as a local legend told to Wilhelm Grimm by his future wife. That is why today, when it snows, people in Hessen say <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">Frau Holle sch<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\">\u00fc<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif\"><em>ttelt ihre Betten aus.<\/em> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did you know this phrase?
