Γεια σας! One of the most common verbs is βλέπω (to see). In this post we will see the different meanings and uses of this verb.

 

#1. to see

Βλέπεις εκείνο το σπίτι; / Do you see that house?

#2. to watch

Βλέπω τηλεόραση. / I am watching television.

#3. to look at

Μου αρέσει να βλέπω τη θάλασσα. / I like looking at the sea.

#4. to have a view

Το δωμάτιό μας βλέπει στη θάλασσα. / Our bedroom looks on the sea.

#5. to meet

Αύριο θα δω τη Μαρία και την αδερφή της. / Tomorrow I will meet Maria and her sister.

#6. to understand

Δεν βλέπεις ότι τον ενοχλείς; / Don’t you understand that you annoy him?

#7. to examine (doctor)

Ο γιατρός θα σας δει αύριο. / The doctor will see you tomorrow.

Idioms

την είδα: to have a high opinion on oneself

Από τότε που έπαιξε σε εκείνο το διαφημιστικό την είδε ηθοποιός. / After he acted on that TV commercial, he thinks he’s an actor.

τα είδα όλα: to be afraid

Όπως οδηγούσα, πετάχτηκε μπροστά μου ένα παιδάκι. Τα είδα όλα! / While I was driving, a child jumped out in front of me! I was scared to death!

τα βλέπω μαύρα: to be pessimist

Μην τα βλέπεις όλα μαύρα! Όλα θα πάνε καλά! / Don’t be so negative! Everything will be OK.

δεν βλέπω την ώρα: to look forward to

Δεν βλέπω την ώρα να πάω στο Παρίσι. / I look forward to going to Paris.

βλέπω με καλό μάτι: συμπαθώ

Με τον πατέρα της τα πάω καλά αλλά η μητέρα της δε με βλέπει με καλό μάτι. / I get along with her father but her mother doesn’t like me.

θα δεις: we use it as a threat

Είπες όλα αυτά τα πράγματα για μενα; Καλά, θα δεις! / Did you say all these things about me? I will get you for that!

δε με (σε, τον κλπ)  βλέπω καλά: something bad will happen

Πρέπει να βρεις γρήγορα δουλειά γιατί δε σε βλέπω καλά. / You must find a job soon because you will be in trouble.

βλέπω με τα ίδια μου τα μάτια: to see with my own eyes

Τους είδα να φιλιούνται με τα ίδια μου τα μάτια! /  I saw them kissing with my own eyes!

*The verb βλέπω is also used in the passive voice (βλέπομαι) and it means to see each other.

Example:

Η Ελίζα δε μένει πια στην Αθήνα έτσι δεν βλεπόμαστε. / Elisa doesn’t live in Athens anymore so we don’t see each other.
