Read a short story in Greek Posted by on Jul 17, 2017 in Pronunciation

Sometimes, it is difficult to find recorded Greek short stories translated in English. In this post, there is a short story I have written and recorded. Each phrase is translated in English. The language and the plot are very simple, so the story can be also read by beginners. If you like reading in original language, this post might be useful.

Birthday under the sunset

On July 17 it is the grandmother’s birthday.  This year, she turns ninety years old.

The last forty years, her children organize a party to celebrate

the event.    The number of the guests is not  stable because  the family has

new members: sons in law, daughters in law and grandchildren.

The last five years, were also added two grandchildren.

Even though the party happens for the grandmother, in fact

it is an opportunity for the family to meet.

The daughters of the grandmother decide on the menu, make the food themselves

and order a huge cake. Their husbands choose the music. However, the grandmother

does not  like much food, nor does she like sweets.  Moreover, she does not like loud music

or the shouts of the children who scare her cats. She sees her relatives like

old friends with whom she lived many moments but who are now strangers.

However, she smiles to everyone, accepts their presents which are every year the same

the candles of her cake. However, this year the idea of the party is unbearable.

“My legs hurt. It’s better not to do anything” she told her daughters.

“No, mom! We don’t know if you will be with us next year!”

The day of the party, she welcomed her guests with courtesy, left her daughters

the moment to cut the cake came. “Where is mom?” asked her son.

Everyone was worried and started searching in the house, except the grandchildren who

found an opportunity to eat the cake. A little girl, though, left the other children and

at the neighborhood but the little girl went up the stairs that led to the rooftop.

Grandmother was sitting on a beach chair and was eating chips.

Her face that was lit by the falling sun, had a serene expression.

She heard the little girl coming and turned.

“What are you doing, grandmother?” asked her granddaughter.

“I am eating chips and enjoying the sunset.

I don’t know if I will be able to see it next year.”
