But how many people ever wondered when did it started and what are the similarities and the differences with the democracy as we know it today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">This is a very brief overview of the very first democracy.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">Democracy has its roots in ancient Greece.<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The name comes from <em>demos<\/em> (<\/span><em>\u03b4\u03ae\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">) that means people and <em>kratos<\/em> (<\/span><em>\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">) which means power<\/span><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">. <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">So, literally is the power of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">Democracy didn\u2019t appear suddenly out of the blue. It<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> was established as a result of continuous reorganizations. <\/span><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">Social and political changes have been started already from the 8<sup>th<\/sup> century BC. The need of equality among the Greek citizens led to the first democratic regimes. Democracy has been developed and improved throughout the years reaching its zenith in the 5<sup>th<\/sup> century BC with the Athenian model.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">The Athenian Democracy in the <em>Golden Age<\/em><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><em> of Pericles<\/em>(<\/span><em>\u03a7\u03c1\u03c5\u03c3\u03ae <\/em><em>\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03c7\u03ae <\/em><em>\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03a0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae<\/em><span lang=\"EN\">) <\/span><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">the <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN\">5<sup>th<\/sup><span class=\"hps\"> century BC <\/span>accomplished <span class=\"hps\">what none of those other who <\/span>have <span class=\"hps\">copied democracy subsequently <\/span>managed to<span class=\"hps\"> accomplish<\/span>: The real power of the people to rule, administrate their own property and manage their affairs. The greatest and the longest lasting democratic leader was the Pericles(images). This is where the name of <em>Golden Age<\/em> came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN\">At that time, any male over 30 years old that satisfies the following requirements could be elected. He has to be<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> a citizen of <em>Athens<\/em> (<\/span><em>\u0391\u03b8\u03ae\u03bd\u03b1<\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">), to have <em>Greek education<\/em> (<\/span><em>\u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae <\/em><em>\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">) and has to not be <em>homosexual<\/em> (\u201ckinedos\u201d, \u201c<\/span><em>\u039a\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03bf\u03c2<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">After the election, <\/span><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">all his personal and family assets were recorded. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">If during his service, he voted a law or he had participated in a law creation that was leading to an affliction of the state and the citizens then, after the estimation of the damage that he had caused, his property was sequestrated until the full compensation of the loss.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">If the damage was greater than his fortune,<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> he <span class=\"hps\">was obliged (after having<\/span> his and his relatives\u2019 property <span class=\"hps\">confiscated<\/span>) <span class=\"hps\">to work unpaid for the government until he would have paid off <\/span>the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\"><span lang=\"EN\">This was the case for a financial loss to the State of Athens. What if<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN\">, however, <span class=\"hps\">the decision which he had taken or had participated caused moral damage to Athens<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN\">Then the situation was even worse. He would be convicted to death penalty on the very same day so that he will not have any chance to escape!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN\">Another great difference with the current democracy model is that the Athenian democracy was direct rather than representative. That means that people didn\u2019t vote politicians to represent them. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">All Athenians voted on just about every law or policy the city was to adopt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN\">As per the voters, <a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a>only adult male citizens of Athens where allowed to vote.
