\"\"<\/a>Today it will be a lesson on how each letter of the Greek alphabet sounds.<\/p>\n

The most of you already know more than the half of the Greek alphabet even if you haven\u2019t realized it yet.<\/p>\n

Do these letters look familiar to you:<\/p>\n

A, B, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, T, Y, X, Z<\/p>\n

and for those who have studied mathematics :<\/p>\n

\u03bb, \u03bc, \u03c0, \u03c1, \u03c3, \u03bd, \u03c6, \u03b8, \u03b4, \u03c9.<\/p>\n

Some of them have different pronunciation but the rest sound more or less similar to the English letters.<\/p>\n

Greek alphabet has 24 letters. I will try to give you the correct Greek sound of each letter. Notice that this is not the correct spelling but the correct sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

You may have noticed a sign above the letters in the Greek words like “\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03ae<\/span>\u03c1\u03b9” (poteeri = glass). This accent mark is called \u201ctonos\u201d and is helpful in indicating the stress in the word. The accent mark is used only on the lower case letters and only in vowels. In some cases the accentuation\u00a0can change the whole meaning of the word even if it spells the same. For example: \u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ae(moni = monastery) and \u00a0\u03bc\u03cc\u03bd\u03b7 (moni = alone(female)).<\/p>\n

Diphthongs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A diphthong is a pair of letters with different sound than their written sequence. These are: <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u03b1\u03b9:<\/strong>\u00a0 sounds the same as \u201c\u03b5\u201d ,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u03b5\u03b9,<\/strong>\u03bf\u03b9:<\/strong> \u00a0sound the same as \u201c\u03b9,\u03b7,\u03c5\u201d,<\/p>\n

\u03b3\u03ba, <\/strong>\u03b3\u03b3:<\/strong> sound as \u201cg\u201d (like in government),<\/p>\n

\u03bc\u03c0:<\/strong> sounds as \u201cb\u201d \u03bd\u03c4:<\/strong> sounds as \u201cd\u201d, <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u03b3\u03c7:<\/strong> sounds as \u201ckh\u201d ,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u03bf\u03c5:<\/strong> sounds like \u201coo\u201d (like in moon),<\/p>\n

\u03b5\u03c5:<\/strong> sounds as \u201cef\u201c ,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u03b1\u03c5:<\/strong>sounds as \u201caf\u201d.<\/p>\n
