It\u2019s true that the most typical dishes, such as souvlaki (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03b2\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9<\/span>), moussaka (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03ba\u03ac\u03c2<\/span>) and Greek salad (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c7\u03c9\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7 \u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03b1<\/span>) are animal-based products and cannot be consumed by vegans.<br \/>\nTraditional Greek cuisine is based on the fasting periods during which people were not allowed to consume animal products, so the list of \u201canimal free\u201d dishes is really long. The ingredients and cooking method may vary, however there\u2019s always one rule to follow: to use seasonal fruits and vegetables.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a nutritionist, so there will be no lecture about the value of fresh products. I can only assure you that if you are vegan you won\u2019t be disappointed by the Greek cuisine. If superfoods are part of your daily diet mind that you can find them only in urban areas or in touristy islands. If you want to taste something different though you can do so anywhere.<br \/>\nThis is a list of the most popular vegan dishes.\u00a0 They are related to summertime and\u00a0 one cannot leave Greece without tasting at least one of them!<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\">1. \u03a7\u03c9\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7 \u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03b1 \u03c7\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03c2 \u03c6\u03ad\u03c4\u03b1<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (<em>horeeateekee salata horees feta<\/em>) Greek salad without feta cheese.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s probably one of the most famous Greek dishes. Some people have it as a main dish. It contains tomatoes (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/span>, <em>domates<\/em>), cucumber (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03bf\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9<\/span>, <em>agouree<\/em>), onion (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03bc\u03cd\u03b4\u03b9<\/span>, <em>kremeedee<\/em>), pepper (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac<\/span>, <em>peepereea<\/em>), olives (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03ad\u03c2<\/span>, <em>elies<\/em>), olive oil (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b5\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03bf<\/span>, <em>eleolado<\/em>)and oregano (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c1\u03af\u03b3\u03b1\u03bd\u03b7<\/span>, <em>reeganee<\/em>).<br \/>\nDon\u2019t use a lemon-based seasoning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>2. \u039a\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03ba\u03c5\u03b8\u03bf\u03ba\u03bf\u03c1\u03c6\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (<em>kolokeethokorfades)<\/em> Zucchini blossoms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA true summer food! A vegan can eat them <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03c7\u03bd\u03af<\/span> (<em>yahnee<\/em>, cooked in tomato sauce) or stuffed but they have to make sure that there\u2019s no cheese or meat in the filling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>3. \u03a6\u03b1\u03c3\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b3\u03af\u03b3\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (<em>fasoleea geegantes<\/em>) Giant beans<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA typical Greek dish. Usually, the beans are baked in tomato sauce but they can be cooked in other ways as well. Their less complicated version is a salad made of green beans, fresh olive oil, vinegar (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03be\u03cd\u03b4\u03b9<\/span>, xeedee), and one melted garlic clove (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03af\u03b1 \u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03bb\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c1\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bb\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7<\/span>, <em>meea skeleeda skordou<\/em> <em>leeomenee<\/em>).\u00a0 More ingredients can be added. The most popular version of <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c6\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9\u03b1<\/span> is <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c6\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9\u03b1 \u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03c1\u03ac<\/span> (fasolakeea ladera) which is made of green beans, potatoes (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/span>, <em>patates<\/em>), onions, parsley (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03ca\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/span>, <em>maeedanos<\/em>) and spices (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac<\/span>, <em>bahareeka<\/em>) cooked in tomato sauce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\">5. \u039c\u03c0\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\u03bc<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (<em>briam<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a mixture of zucchini, potatoes and sometimes egg plants (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c4\u03b6\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2<\/span>, meleetzanes), parsley and aromatic herbs (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03bc\u03c5\u03c1\u03c9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac<\/span>, <em>meerodika<\/em>) , cooked in tomato sauce. It should be served in room temperature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #3366ff\">6. \u0393\u03b5\u03bc\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac<\/span><\/strong> (<em>gemeesta<\/em>) Stuffed tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and zucchini.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey are stuffed with rice, spices, herbs and sometimes raisins. Make sure that they don\u2019t contain ground meat. A similar dish can be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\">\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bc\u03b1\u03b4\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b6\u03af<\/span> <\/strong><\/span>(dolmathakia yalantzee): grape leaves (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b1\u03bc\u03c0\u03b5\u03bb\u03cc\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1<\/span>, <em>abelofila<\/em>) stuffed with rice and aromatic herbs. Again, make sure that they don\u2019t contain ground meat and that they are not served with egg and lemon sauce (<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">\u03b1\u03b2\u03b3\u03bf\u03bb\u03ad\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf<\/span>, <em>abgolemono<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7. \u039c\u03c0\u03ac\u03bc\u03b9\u03b5\u03c2<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (<em>bamies<\/em>) Okra<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMy personal favorite.\u00a0 Non-vegeterians eat it with chicken; however chicken can be omitted and okra can be baked with onions and aromatic herbs in tomato sauce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\">8. \u0399\u03bc\u03ac\u03bc \u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03ca\u03bb\u03bd\u03c4\u03af<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (eemam baeeldee)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA food of Turkish origin. \u0399\u03bc\u03ac\u03bc \u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03ca\u03bb\u03bd\u03c4\u03af means \u201cthe imam fainted\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s made of eggplants stuffed with tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Although it\u2019s very tasty, it can give a heavy feeling in the stomach because the eggplants are fried.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>9. \u039c\u03b1\u03c1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b1\u03c7\u03af\u03bd\u03b9<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>(<em>marlmelada me taheenee)<\/em> Jam and sesame paste<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis is a breakfast dish. <em>\u03a4\u03b1\u03c7\u03af\u03bd\u03b9<\/em> contains sesame seeds and olive oil so it is suitable for vegans. If mixed with jam and spread onto a slice of homemade bread can make a breakfast dish rich in calories yet nutritious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #3366ff\"><strong>10. \u0393\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd<\/strong><\/span> (<em>gleeko tou koutaleeou<\/em>) Spoon sweet<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re up to a sweet desert a good option would be a spoon sweet. It looks like jam but it\u2019s thicker. A homemade spoon sweet contains only natural ingredients such as fruits, sugar, water and maybe lemon or orange juice and\u00a0 nuts. No sweeteners, glucose syrup or artificial colors are added.
