The first thing we learn in a foreign language is how to introduce ourselves. However, sometimes it’s not the easiest thing one learns. The Greek phrases that we use are not so easy to remember and many learners need many days of practice in order to \u201cdigest\u201d them. Here is what I would say in order to introduce myself:<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03b5 \u03bb\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5 \u039f\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03b1. \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1. \u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03b8\u03ae\u03bd\u03b1.<\/p>\n

My name is Ourania. I come from Greece. I live in Athens.<\/em><\/p>\n

What do these phrases really mean?<\/span><\/p>\n

1. \u039c\u03b5 \u03bb\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5 \u039f\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03b1 = <\/span>l<\/span>iterally it means (they) call me Ourania. Another option would be \u201c\u03b5\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b7 \u039f\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u201d= <\/span>I am Ourania. The word \u03b7 <\/span><\/strong>is a female article and can be translated as \u201cthe\u201d so the phrase means \u201cI am the<\/em> Ourania\u201d.<\/p>\n

2. \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1 = <\/span>I am from Greece. \u0391\u03c0\u03cc <\/span><\/strong>means from. The word \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd <\/span><\/strong>is an article and it means the, so this phrase means \u201cI am from the<\/em> Greece\u201d (I come from Greece<\/em>). In Greek, the place names have genders and numbers so \u03c4<\/span>\u03b7\u03bd <\/span><\/strong>can be \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/strong>, \u03c4\u03bf<\/strong>, \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/strong>, <\/span> \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 <\/span><\/strong>or \u03c4\u03b1 <\/span><\/strong>according to the gender of the place name.<\/p>\n

E.g: \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/strong> \u039a\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03b4\u03ac= <\/span>I come from Canada<\/em>. \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf<\/strong> \u039c\u03b5\u03be\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc= <\/span>I come from Mexico<\/em>. \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/strong> \u0397\u03a0\u0391= <\/span>I come from the USA<\/em>.<\/p>\n

3. \u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03b8\u03ae\u03bd\u03b1= <\/span>I live in Athens. \u03a3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd <\/span><\/strong>is formed by the preposition \u03c3\u03b5 <\/span><\/strong>which means to<\/em>, in<\/em> or at<\/em> and the article \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd<\/strong>. <\/span>It can be \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/strong>, \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf<\/strong>, \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/strong>, \u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/strong>, \u03c3\u03c4\u03b1 <\/strong><\/span>depending on the noun that follows.<\/p>\n

E.g.: \u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf <\/span>\u039a\u03bf\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9<\/span>= <\/span>I live in Kolonaki<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03a0\u03b1\u03be\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2<\/span>= I live in Paxous<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b1 \u03a7\u03b1\u03bd\u03b9\u03ac= <\/span>I live in Chania<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Why are these phrases so difficult to remember?<\/span><\/p>\n

The words \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd <\/span><\/strong>and \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd <\/span><\/strong>are confusing because they are not translated in English.<\/p>\n

Some common mistakes are: \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd<\/span> \u0391\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae. \/ \u0395\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u0391\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae<\/span>. \/ \u039c\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9 \u03c4\u03bf \u039d\u03ad\u03b1 \u03a5\u03cc\u03c1\u03ba\u03b7 <\/span><\/span>etc.<\/p>\n

The good news is that even if one omits them, i.e. if they say \u201c\u03b5\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u0391\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u201d <\/span>instead of \u201c\u03b5\u03af\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd<\/strong> \u0391\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u201d <\/span> the native speakers will still understand what they mean, so don’t worry too much. The Greeks are very happy when they meet someone who can pronounce a few sentences in Greek, so just relax and enjoy the communication process.<\/p>\n
