It is formed by the stem of the verb and the endings –\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/strong> <\/span>(for verbs ending in-\u03c9<\/strong>) <\/span>or –<\/strong>\u03ce\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/strong> (<\/span>for verbs ending in –\u03ce<\/strong>): \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf<\/strong>\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 <\/span>(running) \/ \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ce<\/strong>\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 <\/span>(speaking).<\/p>\n

The active participle can be used to express:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. The way the action described by the verb happened:\u00a0\u039f \u03a0\u03ad\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u03ae\u03c1\u03b8\u03b5 \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/span>. <\/span>Petros came running.<\/p>\n

2. The cause: \u03a0\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/span> \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c7\u03ce\u03c2 \u03b1\u03bb\u03ba\u03bf\u03cc\u03bb, \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u03c8\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c5\u03ba\u03ce\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5. => \u039a\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u03c8\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c5\u03ba\u03ce\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03af \u03ad\u03c0\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c7\u03ce\u03c2 \u03b1\u03bb\u03ba\u03bf\u03cc\u03bb. <\/span>He damaged his liver by drinking alcohol constantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw the children running\u201d translated as \u201c<\/span>\u03b5\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2\u201d. \u0395\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2 means I saw the children as I was running<\/span>. The right translation would be <\/span>\u03b5\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03bd\u03b1 \u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd<\/strong>. The active participle is not used the same way in Greek as in English and sometimes the participle in English is analyzed in a sentence, in order to be translated.<\/span><\/p>\n
