Do you like shopping? How often do you go to the stores when you are in Greece? Perhaps you have noticed that there are a lot of street vendors, especially in the big cities. This form of trade is not illegal, provided that the sellers possess the state documents which give them permission to sell their products. In addition, in case they sell food, they must fulfill the necessary hygienic requirements. However, some sellers remain located at the same spot and have their products displayed on a stand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u03bf \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03ac\u03c2 \/ \u03bf \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03c4\u03b6\u03ae\u03c2 (\u03b7 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03cd, \u03b7 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03c4\u03b6\u03bf\u03cd, colloquial):<\/strong> most people know <em>\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9<\/em> (sesame bread ring) the famous Greek street-food. <em>\u039f \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03ac\u03c2<\/em> sells the \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03b1 on the street. They are always kept in a container to be protected from pollution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u03bf \u03bb\u03b1\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b7\u03c2 \/ \u03b7 \u03bb\u03b1\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b1<\/strong> : lottery ticket seller (<em>\u03bb\u03b1\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03bf<\/em> means lottery ticket). You can find them everywhere: at the metro station, at the square or on the street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03c2:<\/strong> <em>\u039a\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf<\/em> means chestnut and \u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03c2 is a person who roast chestnuts and sells them hot. Sometimes they also sell roast corn. If you go to a <em>\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03b7\u03b3\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9<\/em> (Greek fair or festival) or to a soccer match, you are very likely to see them. Some of them are located at a specific spot in the city, usually at the corner of a busy street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u03b7 \u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03bd\u03b1:<\/strong> <em>\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03bd\u03b1<\/em> is\u00a0 a roach coach or a stall, where one can buy a <em>\u03b2\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf<\/em>. <em>\u0392\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> means dirty but <em>\u03b2\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf<\/em> is called the hot-dog or sandwich made in a <em>\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03af\u03bd\u03b1<\/em>. I don\u2019t know why it is called <em>\u03b2\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf<\/em>, as there are many theories about the origin of this word. Some people believe it is called <em>\u03b2\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf<\/em> because it is very greasy and obviously not the healthiest street-food option.<\/p>\n<p>In rural and mountainous villages, there is always a <strong>\u03c8\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c2<\/strong> (fisherman) passing by with his truck once in a week and also a <strong>\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03b2\u03b7\u03c2<\/strong> (green grocer).<\/p>\n<p>In the big cities, there are many green grocers and florists (\u03b1\u03bd\u03b8\u03bf\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03c2) who have their own stand on the street and others who put their goods in a truck and drive through the city to sell them. There are also stands with <strong>\u03b2\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/strong> (books) and <strong>\u03ba\u03bf\u03c3\u03bc\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/strong> <em>(jewelry)<\/em>, usually outside the metro station or at the center of the city.<\/p>\n<p>If you have lived in Athens or any other Greek city, it is certain that you know what a <strong>\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b6\u03ae\u03c2<\/strong> does. <strong>\u03a0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03b6\u03ae\u03c2<\/strong> (from <em>\u03c0\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03cc\u03c2<\/em> which means old) is a person who collects old objects that we do not use anymore. These objects can be fixed and re-sold or used for spare parts.<\/p>\n<p>All these vendors make part of the Greek (urban) culture. Unfortunately, on the streets of Athens there are also children selling tissues or playing music.
