Happy Women\u2019s Day! This year, the anniversary of International Woman\u2019s Day (\u03a0\u03b1\u03b3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03bc\u03b9\u03b1 \u0397\u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u0393\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u03c2) has followed the \u201cbirth\u201d of the #metoo movement<\/a> in Greece. Greece is a conservative country where the concepts of patriarchy (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03af\u03b1), and inequality (\u03b1\u03bd\u03b9\u03c3\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1) grow without limitations. The lockdown restrictions have worsen the existing problems, therefore the need to change our mentality has been more urgent than ever. In this post, we will explore the changes that need to be done.<\/p>\n

We need to realize that gender-based violence (\u03ad\u03bc\u03c6\u03c5\u03bb\u03b7 \u03b2\u03af\u03b1) happens everyday in any place.<\/p>\n

Sex education (\u03c3\u03b5\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03b1\u03b3\u03c9\u03b3\u03ae), which practically does not exist in Greece, can monitor and reduce prejudice: men should learn to understand the concepts of contentment (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b7) and equality (\u03b9\u03c3\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1), i.e to respect the boundaries set by a woman and to treat her as equal. They should also learn that unacceptable behavior has consequences that they will have to face. The stereotype of toxic masculinity (\u03c4\u03bf\u03be\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03b1\u03c1\u03c1\u03b5\u03bd\u03c9\u03c0\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1) has to be fought.<\/p>\n

As far as legislation is concerned, if a woman denounces abuse (\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03af\u03b7\u03c3\u03b7) or sexual assault, she is discouraged to proceed to the prosecution (\u03b4\u03af\u03c9\u03be\u03b7) of the offender and if she finally takes the offender to court she is often treated in a disrespectful way and not not as victim. This mentality needs to change radically. Moreover, the statute of limitations and the standardization of crimes such as sexual harassment must be considered.<\/p>\n

We need to understand and to reach the less privileged women, i.e. refugees (\u03c0\u03c1\u03cc\u03c3\u03c6\u03c5\u03b3\u03b5\u03c2), financially dependent (\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03b5\u03be\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2) or with poor income, women who use drugs (\u03c7\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03c2 \u03bd\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03c9\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ce\u03bd), LGBTQIA+ people (\u03ac\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1 \u039b\u039f\u0391\u03a4\u039a\u0399+) and all those who are not able or do not know where to denounce being abused. We also need to provide them access to the right support centers and shelters for free. It is very important to make these women feel safe and understand that their voice can be heard. Therefore, the financial support of the State is critical.<\/p>\n
