There is a pastry shop in every neighborhood and nowadays chefs experiment with new trends, such as vegan ice-creams or minimal-style sweets. In this post, we will see traditional sweets, some of which are also eaten in other Balkan or Arabic or even Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1. \u0393\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03ac \u03c3\u03b9\u03c1\u03bf\u03c0\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03ac \u03ae \u03b3\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03ac \u03c4\u03b1\u03c8\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(\u03c3\u03b9\u03c1\u03bf\u03c0\u03b9\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2 means syrupy, \u03c4\u03b1\u03c8\u03af means baking pan)<\/p>\n<p>\u03b1. \u0393\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03ba\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03c0\u03bf\u03cd\u03c1\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf (\u03c4\u03bf): a sweet made of fyllo dough (\u03c6\u03cd\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf ) layers, a custard (\u03ba\u03c1\u03ad\u03bc\u03b1) filling and syrup (\u03c3\u03b9\u03c1\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9).<\/p>\n<p>\u03b2. \u039c\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03ac\u03c2 (\u03bf): it is eaten in Turkey and Arab countries. Although it is mostly eaten in Easter (\u03a0\u03ac\u03c3\u03c7\u03b1), we enjoy it all year round. It comes from Armenia, or Turkey. Many people have it for breakfast with jam or a chocolate spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u03b2. \u039c\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b3\u03ac\u03c4\u03c3\u03b1 (\u03b7): a savory or sweet pie from \u0398\u03b5\u03c3\u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03ba\u03b7 (Thessaloniki). It consists of fyllo dough in layers and a custard and it is ideal if you want a sweet breakfast. They are made of a fluffy dough, fried in oil. They are eaten with honey (\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9) and cinnamon on top. Adding a scoop of ice-cream, \u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9 \u03c4\u03b7 \u03b3\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03b7! (\u201cmakes the taste get off the ground\u201d, as we say in Greek).<\/p>\n<p>\u03b2. \u03a0\u03b1\u03b3\u03c9\u03c4\u03cc \u03ba\u03b1\u03ca\u03bc\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9 (\u03c4\u03bf): an ice-cream full of aromas of salep (\u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c0\u03b9) and mastic (\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03c7\u03b1). It can be eaten plain or with \u03b3\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd or \u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2.<\/p>\n<p>\u03b3. \u0392\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1 (\u03b7) (\u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b2\u03c1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b9\u03bf): if you visited Greece in the 70\u2019s or the 80\u2019s, you probably know what \u03c5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b2\u03c1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b9\u03bf is. \u03a5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b2\u03c1\u03cd\u03c7\u03b9\u03bf means submarine. It is a thick and soft mixture, which looks like a scoop of ice-cream. It consists of water, sugar and vanilla or mastic extract, although more ingredients can be added. We take a spoon of the mixture and put it in a glass of cold water. Since the mixture is not chewable, we lick it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#5. \u0393\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03cd\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b1 (for Christmas)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u03b1. \u0394\u03af\u03c0\u03bb\u03b5\u03c2 (\u03b7 \u03b4\u03af\u03c0\u03bb\u03b1): A crispy (\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc) dessert from \u039d\u03cc\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1 \u03a0\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c0\u03cc\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03c2 (southern Peloponnese, especially Kalamata) made of dough in rolls and honey . If you like Greek honey, you will love it!<\/p>\n<p>\u03b2. \u039c\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03ac\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf (\u03c4\u03bf):from \u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9 (honey). They look like cookies and they contain spices such as clove (\u03b3\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c6\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf) and cinnamon.<\/p>\n<p>\u03b3. \u039a\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03c0\u03b9\u03ad\u03c2 (\u03bf): o\u03b9 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03c0\u03b9\u03ad\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03ba\u03ac\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03b1 are the traditional treats we make for Christmas. They contain a lot of butter (\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf) and \u03b1\u03bd\u03b8\u03cc\u03bd\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf (neroli water).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0386\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1 \u03b3\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03ac (Other desserts)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u03b1. \u03a7\u03b1\u03bb\u03b2\u03ac\u03c2 (\u03bf): an oriental dessert since it is consumed in Middle-Eastern countries, in Turkey, even in India. \u03a4here are three types of \u03c7\u03b1\u03bb\u03b2\u03ac\u03c2:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u03c3\u03b9\u03bc\u03b9\u03b3\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2: it\u2019s basic ingredient is \u03c3\u03b9\u03bc\u03b9\u03b3\u03b4\u03ac\u03bb\u03b9 (\u03c4\u03bf) is semolina. It can contain spices such as clove and cinnamon, or orange juice or peelings (\u03be\u03cd\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03c4\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd).<\/li>\n<li>\u039c\u03b1\u03ba\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2 \u03c7\u03b1\u03bb\u03b2\u03ac\u03c2 (\u03bf): it comes from Macedonia (\u039c\u03b1\u03ba\u03b5\u03b4\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1). It\u2019s main ingredient is sesame paste (\u03c4\u03b1\u03c7\u03af\u03bd\u03b9). It is a traditional sweet dessert eaten on Clean Monday (\u039a\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03ae \u0394\u03b5\u03c5\u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1).<\/li>\n<li>\u03a7\u03b1\u03bb\u03b2\u03ac\u03c2 \u03a6\u03b1\u03c1\u03c3\u03ac\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd (\u03bf): it comes from Farsala (\u03a6\u03ac\u03c1\u03c3\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1), a city in (Thessaly). It is made in big copper pot (\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03b9\u03c1\u03ad\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03b6\u03ac\u03bd\u03b9) from experienced artisans. It is a bar made of sesame (\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03ac\u03bc\u03b9) and honey.<\/p>\n<p>\u03b3. \u0393\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03ac \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd (\u03c4\u03bf \u03b3\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd, the sweet of the spoon, literally): It is made of boiled fruits and a thick syrup. Any fruit can make \u03b3\u03bb\u03c5\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd, especially those who are too bitter to be eaten, even vegetables, such as tomatoes (\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2) and small eggplants (\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03c4\u03b6\u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9). It needs experience in order to make an homogeneous syrup.
