\u0393\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c3\u03b1\u03c2! This post is about babies in Greece. If you are related to a Greek family, perhaps you have noticed that the Greek culture is \u201cbaby\u201d-centered. I tried to write facts without giving my personal opinion nor judging the Greek culture.<\/p>\n

These are some interesting facts about babies:<\/h3>\n

#1. \u03b2\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b7 versus \u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03af\u03b1: \u03b2\u03ac\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b7 means christening. It is optional. \u039f\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 (name-giving) is an action which takes place at the registry. The parents (or parent) have to sign the birth certificate and to declare the name of their baby. The christening does not substitute the process of \u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03c3\u03af\u03b1. However, parents who plan to have their child to be baptized, they do not call the baby by his or her name. The most common nick names for babies are \u201c\u03bc\u03c0\u03ad\u03bc\u03c0\u03b7\u03c2\u201d (baby boy) and \u201c\u03bc\u03c0\u03ad\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u201d (baby girl).<\/p>\n

#2. \u039c\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u03ca\u03ba\u03ad\u03c2 \u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03b5\u03c2 (single parent families) are still very rare in Greece.<\/p>\n

#3. A great number of parents rely on the help of their parents (\u03bf\u03b9 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c0\u03c0\u03bf\u03cd\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03bf\u03cd, the baby\u2019s grand father and grand mother) when they have a baby. The grand parents support financially or by \u201cworking\u201d as cooks and baby-sitters. There are a lot of reasons why the chain of eternal reliance on the parents has not been broken yet, but this is not the topic of this post.<\/p>\n

Verbs and expressions about babies:<\/h3>\n

#1. \u03a4\u03bf \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc \u03c4\u03b1 \u2018\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5: a colloquial expression used when a baby has defecated.<\/p>\n

#2. \u03bc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9: to crawl. It is used only for babies.<\/p>\n

#3. \u03ba\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9 \u03bd\u03ac\u03bd\u03b9 \/ \u03c0\u03ac\u03c9 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03bd\u03ac\u03bd\u03b9: to go bye-bye<\/p>\n

#4. \u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03b1: to change diaper<\/p>\n

#5. \u03ba\u03bb\u03b1\u03af\u03c9 \/ \u03b2\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03ba\u03bb\u03ac\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1: to cry<\/p>\n

#6. \u03b2\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 \u03b4\u03cc\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1: to develop teeth (To \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc \u03b2\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9 \u03b4\u03cc\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1).<\/p>\n

#7. \u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c0\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 \u03c4\u03bf \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc: to wipe the baby-sit<\/p>\n

#8. \u03ba\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9 \u03bc\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc: to wash the baby<\/p>\n

#9. \u03bb\u03bf\u03cd\u03b6\u03c9 \u03c4\u03bf \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc: to wash the baby\u2019s hair<\/p>\n

#10. \u03b8\u03b7\u03bb\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9: to breastfeed<\/p>\n

#11. \u03a4\u03bf \u03bc\u03c9\u03c1\u03cc \u03ad\u03b2\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03c0\u03b9\u03c0\u03af\u03bb\u03b1: the baby weaned from the pacifier<\/p>\n
