\u0393\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c3\u03b1\u03c2. Today we will see some expressions with the preposition \u03bc\u03b5<\/i>. \u039c\u03b5 means with<\/i>. Some of the examples are hard to translate, so I have tried to describe their meaning. If you want to add or to change something, feel free to leave a comment. #1. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b1.<\/strong> It is an emphatic way to say no. We use it to mean.\u201cno way\u201d or \u201cnot for any reason\u201d It can be used in a sentence or as a response to a questions.<\/p>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

1. \u0394\u03b5\u03bd \u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b1 \u03bd\u03b1 \u03b4\u03c9 \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 \u03c6\u03c9\u03c4\u03bf\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03af\u03b5\u03c2 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03ad\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5. \/ He did not want me to see the photos from his holidays (under no circumstances).<\/p>\n

2. – \u0398\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03c0\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03be\u03b1\u03b4\u03ad\u03c1\u03c6\u03b7\u03c2 \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5; \/ You will go to your cousin\u2019s party?<\/p>\n

– \u039c\u03b5 \u03c4\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b1. \/ No way.<\/p>\n

#2. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03b1.<\/strong> It has the same meaning with \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03af\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b1 , but it is more colloquial.<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

\u0394\u03b5\u03bd \u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03b1 \u03bd\u03b1 \u03ad\u03c1\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9 \u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u03af \u03bc\u03b1\u03c2. \/ He\/she did not want to come with us (under no circumstances)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

#3. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ad\u03c4\u03c3\u03b9 \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9.<\/strong> It is used to mean to make someone do something they do not want to do.<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03b1\u03c2 \u03ad\u03b4\u03c9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd \u03bd\u03b1 \u03c6\u03ac\u03bc\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ad\u03c4\u03c3\u03b9 \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9, \u03b1\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03cc\u03c4\u03b9 \u03b5\u03af\u03c7\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5 \u03c6\u03ac\u03b5\u03b9. \/ They gave us food (because they wanted to), even though we told them we had eaten.<\/p>\n

#4. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03b6\u03cc\u03c1\u03b9.<\/strong> It is the same as \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ad\u03c4\u03c3\u03b9 \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9. It can also be used to mean by force.<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

\u0397 \u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b1 \u03ad\u03b2\u03b3\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5 \u03ad\u03be\u03c9 \u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u039a\u03ce\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03b6\u03cc\u03c1\u03b9. \/ The teacher expelled Kosta by force.<\/p>\n

It can also mean \u201cbarely\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u0397 \u039c\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03b1 \u03ba\u03bb\u03b1\u03af\u03b5\u03b9 \u03cc\u03bb\u03b7 \u03bc\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1. \u039c\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03b6\u03cc\u03c1\u03b9 \u03ad\u03b2\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5 \u03ba\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03c3\u03ae\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1. \/ Maria has been crying all day. She has barely eaten today.<\/p>\n

#5. (\u03b2\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c4\u03c3\u03b9\u03b3\u03ba\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9:<\/strong> to have a hard time forcing a word out of somebody. \u03a4\u03c3\u03b9\u03b3\u03ba\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9<\/em> means hook.<\/p>\n

\u03a4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac \u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ac \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03ac\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03bd\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03af\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1. \/ The children told what they heard in every detail.<\/p>\n

#7. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc.<\/strong> It is used to wish that things happen well.<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

– \u0391\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf \u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03af\u03b6\u03c9 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03cd\u03c1\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03ac! \/ Tomorrow I start the new job.<\/p>\n

– \u0386\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5, \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc! \/ I hope it goes well! (\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5, cannot be translated. Here, it expresses encouragement).<\/p>\n

It is also used with the verb \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9 (\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c9 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc). We use it when we want to hear something important, or to extract information \u03bfr to make somebody do what we want, so we speak to them in a nice way.<\/p>\n

\u0394\u03b5\u03bd \u03ad\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03b9 \u03ae\u03be\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5 \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03c5\u03c0\u03cc\u03b8\u03b5\u03c3\u03b7, \u03ad\u03c4\u03c3\u03b9 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u03b1\u03c1\u03c7\u03ae \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03bc\u03af\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc.<\/p>\n

She did not say to the policeman what she knew about the case, so they talked to her nicely, at first.<\/p>\n

#8. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ac\u03b3\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf.<\/strong> \u0386\u03b3\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf means wild. It is the opposite of \u201c\u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u201d.<\/p>\n

Example:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u0391\u03c6\u03bf\u03cd \u03b4\u03b5 \u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03ac\u03c2 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc, \u03b8\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2 \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03ac\u03b3\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u201d, \u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7 \u03a3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1 \u03bf \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2. The meaning of this phrase is \u201cwe asked you kindly, but since you are not telling us what we are asking you, we will use force\u201d. I cannot translate this phrase, so if you have a translation in English, feel free to leave a comment.<\/p>\n

#9. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03cc\u03bb\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc.<\/strong> It means with all due respect<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03b5 \u03cc\u03bb\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc, \u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03ac \u03c0\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bc\u03b1\u03c2 \u03b5\u03af\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5 \u03b4\u03b5\u03bd \u03c6\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c4\u03cc\u03c3\u03bf \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c4\u03ac. \/ With all due respect, everything you told us seem rather hard to believe.<\/p>\n

#10. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03cc\u03bb\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf \u03b8\u03ac\u03c1\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2.<\/strong> \u0398\u03ac\u03c1\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 means courage or bravery. We use this expression when we address a person we feel familiar to, not too familiar though.<\/p>\n

\u039c\u03b5 \u03cc\u03bb\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf \u03b8\u03ac\u03c1\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2, \u03b4\u03b5\u03bd \u03b5\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5 \u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bb\u03b1. \/ (Forgive me for saying this) <\/i>but you are not appropriately dressed.<\/p>\n

#11. \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf.<\/strong> We use it when we are about to say something that the others might find disturbing.<\/p>\n

\u039f \u03be\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03c1\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2 \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd \u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03af\u03bf\u03c2, \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf. \/ Your cousin is very ridiculous (my apologies<\/i>, for saying that<\/i>).<\/p>\n

#12. (\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 \u03bc\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/strong> (slang). This is my favorite one. It is used when a driver takes an abrupt turn without losing control. It is also used to mean that a vehicle goes very fast.<\/p>\n
