However, the general mood is not festive, as the present war creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. This is probably the right time to talk about <b>\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c1\u03af\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039b\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 <\/b>(the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-literature.com\/greece_aristophanes_lysistrata.html\">Lysistrata<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3904\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1564571781900-a95080a226a6?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&amp;ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop&amp;w=1170&amp;q=80\" aria-label=\"Uta Scholl EjR4AeJ5U O Unsplash\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3904\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3904\"  alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/greek\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/03\/uta-scholl-EjR4AeJ5U_o-unsplash.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/greek\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/03\/uta-scholl-EjR4AeJ5U_o-unsplash.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/greek\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/03\/uta-scholl-EjR4AeJ5U_o-unsplash-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@uta_scholl?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Uta Scholl<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/old-epidauros?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Aristophanes was the most important <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03ba\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2 \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2 <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">comed<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><em>y writer<\/em>)<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u0391\u03c1\u03c7\u03b1\u03af\u03b1 \u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> He was born in Athens, around 446 BC, at the time when the construction of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03a0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03ce\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">the Parthenon<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> began, in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the area which is known today as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03a0\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b1<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<em>Plaka<\/em>)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u0395\u03af\u03c7\u03b5 \u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03c9\u03b3\u03ae<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<em>he was an aristocrat, literally: he was of aristocratic origin<\/em>) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, criticized the Democrats and defended <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ae\u03bd\u03b7<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<em>peace<\/em>)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. He was interested in the prosperity of the Athenians and in his <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">comedies<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> he refers to the economic and social problems that afflicted Athens at that time. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>O \u03a0\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/b><\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd \u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03b5 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(<em>Plato had a very high opinion of<\/em> <em>him<\/em>)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. He wrote over <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">forty<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> comedies, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">eleven<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">of which <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">survive. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Nine <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of them were written during the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03a0\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc<\/b><\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03a0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b5\u03bc\u03bf<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">Peloponnesian War<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (431-404 BC). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">One of his most famous works is <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u039b\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ac\u03c4\u03b7<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><em>Lysistrata<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">which was written around 411 BC. The play takes place in ancient Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata secretly persuade<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">d <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the women <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> Athens <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">also women from other cities, to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">practice <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c3\u03b5\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae \u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c7\u03ae <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(<em>sexual abstinence<\/em>) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">order to punish their husbands who started the war <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The women<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">id <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> not agree but <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">after<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the Spartan <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u039b\u03b1\u03bc\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03ce<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">Lampito<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">was<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> convinced, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03ad<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03b2\u03b1\u03bb\u03b1\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03c7\u03ad\u03b4\u03b9\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/b><\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c3\u03b5 \u03b5\u03c6\u03b1\u03c1\u03bc\u03bf\u03b3\u03ae<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">the<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><em>y followed their plan<\/em>)<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">First, they occupied <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u0391\u03ba\u03c1\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b7<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (Acropolis) and then they started the abstinence. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">men <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">attacked the women but did not succeed to end the abstinence. Finally, with the help of<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">a young and pretty woman, named<strong> \u0394\u03b9\u03b1\u03bb\u03bb\u03b1\u03b3\u03ae<\/strong> (<em>Reconciliation<\/em>), <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the war came to an end and the women organized <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(banquet). <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">This comedy is not only about peace but also about the conjugal love. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The elements of <strong>\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03c9\u03b4\u03af\u03b1<\/strong> (<em>parody<\/em>) <strong>\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u03c3\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1<\/strong> (<em>satire<\/em>) are present in all Aristophanes\u2019 comedies. Sometimes, they are expressed in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c5\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u03c4\u03c1\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(<em>extravagant way<\/em>) and some others in a restrained way but through these elements <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u03c4\u03bf \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd\u03b5\u03af \u03bc\u03b5 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u03b7\u03b8\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> (<em>the audience communicate with the actors<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Unfortunately, we don\u2019t know what the aftermath of the \u201cmodern\u201d war will be. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Let\u2019s hope that it will end soon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in Ancient Greece, you can read about the Parthenon<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/greek\/news-from-greece-about-the-parthenon\/\"> here<\/a>.
