It is believed to have a Tunisian origin. It&#8217;s similar to the Mexican breakfast dish <em>huevos rancheros<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Shakshuka in Hebrew means &#8220;all mixed up.&#8221; and is related to the Hebrew verb <span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 21px; font-family: times new roman;\">\u05dc\u05b0\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05e7\u05b0\u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05e7<\/span>, &#8220;to tremble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Because eggs are the main ingredient, it is often on breakfast menus, but in Israel, it is also a popular evening meal, especially in the winter. It has been said to challenge hummus and falafel as a national favorite.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><em>Allergy and vegan information:<\/em><\/strong> If you&#8217;re allergic to eggs, or eating vegan, you can use tofu as a substitute. Adding a little tumeric or mustard with the tofu also helps. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>Recipe<\/h2>\n<p><em>This recipe makes 2 servings<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Ingredients:<\/h3>\n<p>4-5 tomatoes, roughly chopped<br \/>\n2 cloves minced garlic<br \/>\n1 onion, chopped<br \/>\n4 eggs<br \/>\n1 red bell pepper, diced in 1\/4 inch squares<br \/>\nOlive oil<br \/>\nBlack pepper<br \/>\nCayenne pepper or tobasco sauce to taste<\/p>\n<h3>Directions:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>On medium heat, cook the onions and garlic in oil for a few minutes until soft (about 7-8 minutes).<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomatoes, and bell pepper and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Bring to boil. Add black pepper, cayenne pepper or tobasco sauce.<\/li>\n<li>Bring the heat down and let it simmer until the sauce thickens.<\/li>\n<li>Break open the eggs gently and slide them onto the sauce (try not to break the yolks).
