During the Hebrew Book Week, book stores and publishing houses sell their works in stalls all over the country. Every city, every town, and every local council open up their squares, libraries, and boulevards for book markets. All the books are in discount. But all of this is insignificant compared to the literature festival held during the week: the award ceremony of Sapir Prize, public readings, get-togethers with authors, and my favorite: authors signing their books. You can spot them in the stalls, chat with them, and ask for a personal dedication.

Hebrew Book Week June 2016 Tel-Aviv (photo by Ayana)

The main fair takes place in Tel-Aviv at Rabin Square, and for nerds like me it’s the perfect party: Hebrew music is playing in the speakers, stalls selling snacks and bites, and everyone is engaged with books. 🙂

Hebrew Book Week June 2016 Tel-Aviv (photo by Ayana)

Text vocabulary

Hebrew = עִבְרִית (Iv-rit)

Book = סֵפֶר (Se-fer)

Week = שָׁבוּעַ (Sha-vu-a)

Hebrew Book Week = ֺשְבוּעַ הַסֵּפֶר הָעִבְרׅי (She-vu-a Ha-se-fer Ha-iv-ri)

Book store = חֲנוּת סְפָרִים (Ha-nut Se-fa-rim)

Literature = סִפְרוּת (Sif-rut)

Library = סִפְרִיָּה (Sif-ri-ya)

Discount = הֲנָחָה (Ha-na-ha)

90 years ago, at the first intermediate day of Passover, Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv prepared for the first Hebrew Book Day.
