Hello everyone! My name is Ayana, and I’m joyfully writing this Hebrew blog for the last year and a half. I’m a native Hebrew speaker, and yet I admit: Hebrew tongue twisters are tough! The monotonic tone and all those similar sound consonants don’t make it easy. And still it is a good way to practice Hebrew, pronunciation and vocabulary. So give it a try, it’s a great amusing challenge. And don’t forget: say them as fast as you can!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1) One of the famous Hebrew tongue twisters is about a girl name Sara. Even the translation is a bit tongue twisting, because Sara is singing a happy song.<\/p>\n

\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05de\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7, \u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05de\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4<\/p>\n

The girl name and the verb are almost homophones: they are pronounced the same, except for the first letter. The name \u2018Sara\u2019 (\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4) is spelled with a \u05e9\u05c2\u05d9\u05df. The verb \u2018singing\u2019 (\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4) is spelled with a \u05e9\u05c1\u05d9\u05df. And it goes on: the object \u2018song\u2019 (\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05e8) consists of \u05e9\u05c1\u05d9\u05df and \u05e8’ as well. The adjective \u2018happy\u2019 (\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05de\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7) is also spelled with a \u05e9\u05c2\u05d9\u05df. Now try to say it twice, like in the sentence above.<\/p>\n

2) A modern version of this tongue twister includes the same Sara. But this time Sara isn’t singing a happy song, but eating sushi. And Sara (\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4) putting (\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) garlic (\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd) in the sushi (\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c5\u05c1\u05d9). It’s funnier than the classic version, but not less difficult!<\/p>\n

3) Another famous tongue twister dealing with different consonants: \u05d2’ and \u05d3’. The translation is a tongue twister by itself: a gardener (\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05df) grew (\u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05d3\u05b5\u05bc\u05dc) grain (\u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d2\u05b8\u05df) in the garden (\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05df).<\/p>\n

\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05df \u05d2\u05b4\u05bc\u05d3\u05b5\u05bc\u05dc \u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d2\u05b8\u05df \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05df, \u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d2\u05b8\u05df \u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc \u05d2\u05b8\u05bc\u05d3\u05b7\u05dc \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d2\u05b7\u05bc\u05df<\/p>\n

4) Tongue twisters are great fun not just for playing, but also for creating. All you need in order to create a tongue twister of your own is a bunch of words, consisting of the same consonants that together will assemble a brief story. I heard a good one lately, it’s new and much more sophisticated than the others.<\/p>\n

\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05e4\u05b5\u05d8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05e4\u05b7\u05d8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05c5\u05dc\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e6\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05d5\u05bc: ‘\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05e1!’<\/p>\n

Although the longest tongue twister in our list so far, it’s the easiest one, in my opinion. And the funniest one without doubt: Shalom (\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd), a peace judge (\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05e4\u05b5\u05d8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd), sentenced (\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05e4\u05b7\u05d8) the day before yesterday (\u05e9\u05c1\u05c5\u05dc\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd), sixty (\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd) observing the Shabbat men (\u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea), who yelled (\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e6\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05d5\u05bc) Shabbos (\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05e1)!<\/p>\n

5) And this one I came up with myself. It’s about a girl (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) named Alma (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4). The sentence is actually a question: what for (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4) worked (\u05e2\u05b2\u05de\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4) the girl (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) Alma (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4)? And the following answer is: the girl (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) Alma (\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05d4) worked (\u05e2\u05b2\u05de\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4) for (\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8) the commission (\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4).<\/p>\n
