{"id":2318,"date":"2018-08-20T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hebrew\/?p=2318"},"modified":"2018-08-12T13:39:44","modified_gmt":"2018-08-12T17:39:44","slug":"hebrew-verbs-in-action-binyan-piel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hebrew\/hebrew-verbs-in-action-binyan-piel\/","title":{"rendered":"Hebrew Verbs in Action: Binyan Pi\u2019el"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2319\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hebrew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/08\/piel-350x220.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hebrew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/08\/piel-350x220.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/hebrew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/08\/piel.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Hebrew language is composed of many roots.<\/p>\n<p>The verbal stems \u2013 the <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05c5\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05e0\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong> (plural form, pronounced as bin-ya-nim) \u2013 are the patterns that shape them into actual words. <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df<\/strong> (singular form, pronounced as bin-yan), literally means building, is a firm structure into which the root is inserted to form the verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are seven verbal stems in the Hebrew Language: <\/strong><strong>hif<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>il, huf<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>al, nif<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>al, pa<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>al, pi<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>el, pu<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>al, it<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>pa<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>el. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05c5\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05c5\u05d9\u05ea \u05d9\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05c5\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05e0\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd: <\/strong><strong>\u05d4\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc, \u05d4\u05bb\u05e4\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc, \u05e0\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc, \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc, \u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc, \u05e4\u05bc\u05bb\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our last post we delved into the root <strong>\u05d0.\u05d9.\u05e8<\/strong>, and its infinitive <strong>\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05e8<\/strong> (means \u201cto illustrate\u201d). This root in Hebrew is conjugated in the verbal stem pi\u2019el (<strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong>). The verbal stem <strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong> is one of the easiest <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05c5\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05e0\u05c5\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong> in Hebrew. You can tell this just by looking \u2013 no prefix or suffix to its basic form. The prefixes and suffixes that will be added to the root in this <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df<\/strong> will be only belong to the pronouns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong> is an active verbal stem. The roots in this <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df<\/strong> are not passive.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s check, for example, the conjugations of the root <strong>\u05e1.\u05e4.\u05e8<\/strong> according to the tenses. No prefix in the past tense.<\/p>\n<p><u>Present tense<\/u>: the vowel of the first letter is <strong>\u05dd\u05b7<\/strong> (patach). Only <strong>\u05de\u05b0<\/strong> as a prefix in the present tense for all the pronouns.<\/p>\n<p><u>Future tense<\/u>: the vowel of the first letter is <strong>\u05dd\u05b7<\/strong> (patach). Four prefixes for the future tense: the letters <strong>\u05d0\u05d9\u05ea&#8221;\u05df<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df \u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong> stresses the activity of the doer. Many verbs in <strong>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05df \u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05e2\u05b5\u05dc<\/strong> bear the meaning of causing, making this action happening. Verbs like: <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05d7<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05d6<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05e7<\/strong> (to strengthen), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05e7<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05e6<\/strong><strong>\u05b5\u05bc<\/strong><strong>\u05e8<\/strong> (to shorten), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05de<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05d3<\/strong> (to teach), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05d2<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05d3<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05dc<\/strong> (to bring up, to rear), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05e4<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05ea<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05d7<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong> (to develop), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05d7<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05e0<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05da<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong> (to educate), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05e4<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05d8<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05e8<\/strong> (to fire), <strong>\u05dc<\/strong><strong>\u05b0<\/strong><strong>\u05e7<\/strong><strong>\u05b7<\/strong><strong>\u05d1<\/strong><strong>\u05bc\u05b5<\/strong><strong>\u05e5<\/strong> (to gather). For example, the infinitive <strong>\u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05e4\u05bc\u05b5\u05e5<\/strong> (pronounced as le-ka-petz), means \u201cto hop\u201d, \u201cto skip\u201d. The vowel in the first letter of the root will change as well.
